bike opinions wanted

Just wanting some opinions on a bike one of my buddys has, and it thinking about getting rid of for pretty cheap. I hardly know any info about older bikes such as this, so just wanting some thoughts on it.

Its a 1988 yamaha FJ1200. Good bike? Bad? Any constant problems with any certain areas? Just all around opinions. Thanks for all the help

Take it from someone who rides a '89 FJ, its not that bad for street riding. The problem with a bike this old is that even though it looks pristine (or not), parts such seals, etc., will probably need to be replaced. Fork seals in particular because the bike is heavy. Parts can still be ordered but there is limited aftermarket parts. The good stuff is that it not a torture machine on the back, the motor puts out a ton of torque and is simple to work on. With a few mods (taken directly from a later model YZF) the bike performs much better. The FJ technology is obviously not up with today's standards but it is a nice bike. Send me an message if you want more information.

Well Charles, if that's you opinion, that's cool, but that's not it, if I dissed the FJ, it wasn't my intention, note that I said "not so great for street riding"...I'm not biased, really. I never said that it was a piece of sh..blah blah blah.

Hey Carl, long time no see.

Hello.....who's this?

Depends on how much the person is asking. The FJ motor alone is a commodity for a lot of legend car racers. With 45k I would probably pass. I bought mine with 9k from an older gentleman. It now has 16k. In hindsight I've put too much into it but its been reliable. With what I've spent I could have just bought a Bandit 1200 and had a ton of aftermarket parts to shop for. Yes its old, yes its heavy (570 lbs wet), but I have no regret. You either love the FJ or hate it. A lot of people still want them. If you are interested, have someone like Patrick at Motorcycles Unltd. evaluate it for you.
Good luck.
