caught on tape

Video: Caught on tape: Motorcycle stunts scare I-5 motorists
Larger screen E-mail this clip

SEATTLE - On Saturday evening on northbound Interstate 5 near Federal Way, alarmed motorists watched as a group of motorcyclists moved out across all of the lanes, speeding and doing wheelies.

The incident prompted many people to call 911.

One motorist rolled video as the motorcyclists fanned out to block traffic, then popped wheelies at 60 mph - in traffic.

Washington State Patrol Sgt. Keith Trowbridge says charges could range from illegal lane changes to reckless driving. The bikes are fast and hard to catch without a dangerous high-speed pursuit.

At Eastside Motosports in Bellevue, veteran motorcyclists on the staff checked out the video of Saturday's incident.

Motorcycle group performs stunts on freeway
"It's mixed emotions for me," said Dustin Gatten. "As I've done it and I've been in the car and seen it. And do I do it any more? No. Absolutelynot. Unfortunately it's hard to find a place to go riding sometimes."

It may be frustrating for motorcyclists, but the law warns that I-5 is not for popping wheelies.

"If we get them, they're going to either pay some heavy fines or go to jail," said Trowbridge.

The State Patrol is working to crack down on motorcycle stunts in traffic.

A year ago, most incidents involved one rider darting out, doing his thing and speeding away.

Saturday evening's I-5 was a bigger deal - a planned and coordinated rolling freeway blockade.

"It's hard for US to do that sort of thing," said Trowbridge. "We got radios. We talk about it ahead of time. We plan it out… and you guys are passing each other, doing wheelies."

The State Patrol asks for your help in corralling the wheelie poppers. If you see it happening, try to spot a license plate or get a description of the riders or their gear. But don't get too close. It's just too dangerous.

The State Patrol reports that over the past weekend, they got 66 reports of "erratically driven" motorcycles.

it's down by LA i think... they said they were getting on 405 from I-5... that is either just north of LA about 20 miles from Santa Monica or just south of long beach. from the looks of it, i'd say it's just north of LA

True.

You must concede then that the riders are f#@king idiots too because they think holding up traffic and riding wheelies is cool too.

Yeah, some wheelies are cool, but any idiot with a liter bike can do those kind of wheelies. Heck, most 600s will do them with little to no effort. Riding wheelies like that doesn't take any skill.

I don't "hate", I just call it like I see it. For the record, I'm perfectly able to ride wheelies like that on my GSXR, it's not a challenge. Now, I don't have the ability to actually stunt- or do cool wheelies like stunters do, but pulling up a wheelie with a 120+ hp bike takes little to no skill to accomplish.

See, that's where you're wrong. If one of those guys eats shyte, he's done because they held up a bunch of angry soccer moms who are trying to get by on their SUVs that aren't going to stop when the brain surgeon hits the pavement.

It's a dumbass thing to do, it's illegal, it's dangerous to the rider and those that share the road with them, and it's not even a skillful thing to accomplish.

Dude, where the did I ever say it was "cool"? I think the stunting is cool, and I like the kinda shyte you see Jason Britten do on Superbikes, but I never, ever said that I thought that gay azz stuff on the freeways was "cool" at all.

No problem, see you on Sunday at the track

Like I said, when someone eats shyte on the freeway, your buddies aren't going to help you when Momma in her SUV plows that azz!

Now, that wasn't so hard was it? We agree whole-heartedly on this

BS. Any wiener with a liter bike and the ability to twist the throttle without falling off can pull these wheelies. Big deal.
