Horseshit.

avg speed on 45 is 75-80, general rush hour ranges, a bit slower. Sure you get the
SFB arsewipe trying to use it as a racetrack doin 95-100+, but that's by no means 'average'.

Wish they had more when they get 'owned' by a katana... so another words what someone else rides is important to their own bike.
BS, excuse.

I used to ride a 125 DS on the street... it could 'keep' up with traffic, the ex250 is more than useful/capable for anyone on the street, and excellently setup to learn on.

But I have no experience with motorcycles whatsoever other than taking MSF course. I did well on both the skills and written test.

What do you guys think?
My first bike years ago was a GSXR 750. Main thing is take the MSF course. Also don't ride beyond your limits. Don't drive crazy on roads you don't know. For the first few months you may want to baby it until you learn to ride and handle your bike better.

Check insurance rates first some people buy a bike and get a rude awaking when getting their rates.

Yeah, I've been tempted to get a Street Triple for my 2nd bike. I think they are amazing, but even then for a second bike I feel the SV650 will be much more manageable as I grow as a rider than the street triple (which puts out some serious HP compared to the stock SV).

I commend you inquiring about the 250 first. It isn't going to be your only bike.... but it will be an important stage. You didn't buy a corvette or Lotus for your 16 year old with learning permit did you? Hope not. You grow into it. The bikes have so much more difficulty than a car and issues that cars don't have. ABS on cars makes it harder to lose control in a Lotus with slammed brakes. Do the same on the 600cc without ABS and your asking for trouble! GROW into it and you'll enjoy the sport and passion much longer. Its hard to resist. Heck I would love that new Hyperstrada, but as much as bikes are a luxury, GROW. First time you go sky diving you don't do it from Navy seal high altitude drop heights. First time you scuba dive you don't go 2 tanks on the back and down really really deep. First time you drive you don't drift around corners.... First time you ride, you LEARN the ART and skill of riding.

Take it easy, its really hard when you have 600cc and 120 horses begging to be let loose!

Before I got my SV (LOVE IT!) I rode a year on my 250 (which I currently use as a track bike) commuting daily on it including freeway riding. Yes ... it's under powered and takes time to get to speed.... but I've never had any problems getting up to speed entering the freeway ... one thing you learn very quickly riding the 250 is gear selection. You want to pass someone ... two quick downshifts even in the 250 is usually more than enough to pass a car on the freeway.

Sure, there are people that learn quite successfully on a 600cc ... but those people remind me of a conversation I had with a potential college drop out 10 years ago ... he kept giving me reason why a college degree wasn't required for success and gave me examples ... sure ... you can find examples of people who made it good without a college degree ... but for every one of those success stories I'll show you 100 people working minimum wage wishing they had a college degree.... annectdotal stories can be somewhat misleading, because the few that actually are successful in learning on a 600+ bike are the only ones around ... the unsuccesful ones aren't here to tell you their experience, and I suspect that there are a lot more of them than there are of the succesful.

YOU stated as being 'beaten' by a 'kanotuna' (katana) as a reason
for going with a 600 over 250. In jest, or whatever it's a stupid
excuse/justification.

Here's somethign to look at, go check Racer's 'wreck' thread and compare the # of 250's involved to all the other displacement bikes.

they only go as fast as you want them too

I want a pink helmet and bike so I can be an expert on everything too!! I mean that is all there is too it right? Oh maybe a few laps around the track.. Im continually amazed at how "some" track riders want to transfer there expertise (using the term loosely) from track to street. Im sorry but I'm much more inclined to take advice from an individual who can ride the out of a bike on an imperfect public road or highway rather than someone who has reached legendary status among there own click at the track. But as we have all seen displayed here it must be to just sit and bite your tongue when you have so much positive information to offer the group or individual that originally posted a question.
