i asked first, you guys are saying 600s are great starter bikes, so WHY?

i can tell you why a 250 is a good starter bike, AFTER you tell me why a 600 makes a good one? i mean why say it if you can't back it up.

Unless you are doing it to pose you dont NEED to upgrade.. maybe you should take tht 600 of yorus out to the track to see its real potential.

A ex250 is more forgiving of rider mistakes period... Less rake and trail, less braking ability, less power.

I'll add better MPG, cheaper parts, simpler to work on, way cheaper insurance, more comfortable as well.

tell that to my 300+lb instructor friend, who bought 1 last yr after 40yrs of riding and a valkyeria and 1200 bandit in the garage or another inst. friend who teaches MSF and track instructs for LSTD. they'll tell ya differently.

they're still faster then 95% of the cars on the road.

In my opinion it is a good starter bike. I never said as a matter of fact. I have no facts to prove anything. I can not sit here and give the facts as well as you can. Never said I could.
In my opinion there is nothing wrong with a 600 as a starter bike, it depnds on the individual. Read my quotes about how a person drives a cage. Thats my opinion. If you can state the facts, Im all for listening to them. I try to soak in as much knowledge every day. It is how a person becomes eclectic. I do not know it all, and very little when it comes to some of you guys. But just b/c you have been riding longer and can beat me on a track does not mean you are always right. On any topic.

I apologize to the person who posted this, but in the end you have live feedback of people going back and forth trying to defend their opinion. But in the end, It is that, just an OPINION. Do what you feel is best for you. We can all make valid points for a 250 or a 600.

Ladies, help me out here. Does size matter? lol

sorry

Because so many lay them down, there just isnt enough parts bikes out there to fix them all back up.???

I guess thats the answer???

Seriously.....I was joking...

but it has a slight ring of truth to it.

i agree a 250's brakes are not up to snuff of a 600SS

but they still stop better then most cars on the road, but it leads this

OK I'll take a stab at it. Knowing of course I'm going to get flamed for it but here goes:

Since you are probably going to upgrade to a 600 anyway, why not just start out on one? Seat time being the most important aspect of learning to ride, the longer one is IN the seat the better.

The uses for a 600 are far greater than a 250. I know you guys say a 250 can keep up in the twisties, and this may be true, right up untill a straight away.

Notice my thread was pre-emted with "wrist and self control." Both of these can be learned easily on something that is going to "bite back." How will you know not to ram it if you are always on a 250 at WOT?

As with anything the key is learning curve, respecting the bike, and riding within your limits. All of this can easily be achieved with a 600 or a 250.

Once you drop your 250 it will be hard to sell it back for what you bought it for. Might as well just get the 6er so when you have to fix something it will be what you keep anyway.

Factor in aesthetics, ego, and machismo. You can shrug it off all you like, but being happy with your purchase should be a factor in deciding what you are going to fork over a chunk of cash for. Why shouldn't he be satisfied with his purchase. Are we going to deny that pulling up to pp1 on 2fiddy can sometimes get some strange looks from others. (Keep in mind pp1 is mostly a kickstand party)

This guy sounds like an adult. He has taken MSF and feels ready for a bike. IMO he should test ride both and see what he feels most comfortable on. The 600 is not a first for everybody, but in some cases one can be just fine.

Yes, I have read the why not to get a 600 as your first bike thread. Thanks it was very well written and informative.

OK there I said it. Now tear it up like you are going to anyway.

of course not. just takes 30 miles of runway to get there.
I know that is an over-exagerated comment but would you say it takes longer for the 250 to reach the speed limit on the highway than an average sedan or truck?
