Registering Bike: Yes another thread about it.

Since laws have changed so many times I couldn't get really a straight forward answer.

Can you still do the gift tax thing on used purchases?

If I plan to do it legit, I read somewhere to used 81% of the bikes value to keep the taxes the lowest. Is this right?

Nope, I tried with my Blazer, didn't work. Say you paid like $500 for it or something.

new law can't do that you have to pay bb value no matter what you paid for it. Which sucks if you buy a basket case to put back together and have to pay taxes on a couple of grand, I need to find a way around this..

you can gift tax it. You just need a letter from the seller saying it was gifted to you. If you go to the right person at the tax office window, they'll tell you how to do this.

I did it with the most current bike, and only paid $45 vs. the bb value of the bike and paying almost $500. As asked if there was anyway around this and the young lady said to have him gift it to me. She even gave me the forms needed for the gift to fill out.

The only way I know of is if the KBB value is not listed in their book, then they go by 6% of what you say its worth.

Example: went to register a 1986 Fiero. They didn't have the value. I told them I paid 40$ for it... Sales tax... less than a buck. Nothing they can really say.
