Need an opinon

Ok, Well I just finished my MSF, and I have come across this bike at my mechanic's shop, that really just sits around most of the time. So I went there to check it out. He has painted it again. And he has overhauled the engine less than 5k ago. New pistons, headers, exhaust, HID headlights, oil changes on time, new chain, and fresh paint, and new tires. its a 99' CBR 600 charcoal gray paint. The only thing is the previous owner commuted from Houston to Louisiana every weekend, so the bike has 120K on it, which is pretty crazy for a motorcycles. But my mechanic has had it for about 6 years now. Is this thing still worth buying, what questions should I ask my mechanic, and what is a fair price?

you should pay 1k for that bike thats pretty much all it's worth regardless of how well it runs with 120,000 miles on it, now however if it does run 1k is a good price you both can be happy with, but for 2k you can get a much better bike if you shop around

Because of the high mileage what could go wrong?

Transmission
wheel bearings
steering bearings
swingarm bearings
cables
hoses

Really boils down to how much you can get it for, and how well you know and trust the mechanic. There are plenty of older bikes running around without issues, so don't let the mileage or age scare you.

When you say high miles, you have to think about all the parts that move when the bike rolls.

So a 99 with 20K miles "should" be in much better shape overall mechanically, as compared to the same model with 120K... given equal and proper maintenance.

That being said, if the price is right in your book, and you feel comfortable with the seller, then the decision is yours...

I sold my dirtbike recently and the buyer wanted to bring it to his mechanic first. Due to distance this was an issue. We signed a contract. The gist of it was, he pay me the full amount with a bank check. I allow him three days to take the bike to his mechanic for review, he make his decision. If he wants it, or fails to return it, the sale is complete and I mail him the title within one week. If he returns it I give him a full refund.

I got a free review of the bike by a mechanic and the buyer had peace of mind. The bike sold.

I would be happy to scan the contract and send it to anyone who wanted it for reference. (personal info edited of course)

I mention this so you can have the cbr in question examined by a mechanic of your choice, cough-patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited-cough cough

The fact that he had the engine apart, etc.... Unless you know the guy well and trust his work, its a hole shot IMHO.
