Santa Fe ISD board member dies after motorcycle crash
Mother of 5 was elected to new term in May

GALVESTON A Santa Fe school board member died in a Galveston hospital early today from injuries suffered when the motorcycle on which she was riding collided with a pickup truck.

Beth Windham Davis, who was elected to a new term on the board last month, was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. at the University of Texas Medical Branch, a Santa Fe police spokeswoman said.

Davis, the mother of five children, won a second term on May 10 after serving three years as a school trustee.

She was riding on a motorcycle driven by her husband, Jack "Jay" Evans, 43, also of Santa Fe. Evans, a BP employee, remained at UTMB today in good condition, according to a hospital spokesman.

The accident was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday. Police said the motorcycle was southbound on Tower Road when the driver of a pickup truck heading north turned into the couple's path at Texas 6.

The pickup driver, Robert Borders, 21, of Santa Fe, was not injured, police said. He was given a field sobriety test and a blood sample was taken, officers said, but they do not suspect alcohol was involved.

No charges have been filed. The accident remains under investigation.

Davis was well known in Santa Fe, a Galveston County town where she worked as a physician's assistant, said school Superintendent Jon Whittemore.

"She was a good lady, a very likable person who was very active in the community," Whittemore said.

She had four children in the Santa Fe district in grades eight through 12 and a stepdaughter who graduated two years ago, he said.

Diana Gray, 50, who knew Davis for 12 years, said Davis helped those who could not help themselves. "She was as sweet as honey and always put others before herself," Gray said.

School board member J.R. "Rusty" Norman said the school board had postponed a budget meeting scheduled for Tuesday because of Davis's death.

"Beth wanted what was best for the students and staff at Santa Fe," Norman said. "She had a passion for that."

Obviously, it's never good to see any motorcyclists killed, but I REALLY hate to see it be a passenger. Putting your own life on the line by not riding defensively is one thing, but to not ride defensively when you're two-up is something entirely different.

This was so sad to hear! She was an amazing, funny, quick witted and caring woman. She was always quick with the jokes, that's for sure! Liked to give me about what on earth was I feeding my son to make him grow like he was. The last conversation I had with her was about motorcycle riding and how dangerous it could be, yet how once you felt that freedom of the road you craved it just that much more after each ride. She will be greatly missed by the entire Santa Fe community!!

RIP Beth

This week has been bad in Santa Fe with that 18 y.o boy killed by a girl carrying a stolen stop sign in her truck and now this.

this from another report - Cook said neither Davis, who was a passenger, nor Evans, the driver, wore helmets.

Put your helmet on - it might save your life.

+1 Never having anything good to say and this will be the third time I say this; it's easier to always be negative. My prayers for the husband and the 5 children in their time of need.

My thoughts and prayers go out to her and the family. She sounded like an outstanding person. And I'm ashamed for any member of "MH" that makes inappropriate comments during this sensitive time for this family.
