Only when there isn't a td going on. You can run in the street group. I think it's the 13th of June.

Man, those "absolutes" of riding/ braking/ cornering really are bothersome sometimes. That works great in MSF, but in racing and aggressive track riding, almost none of the fast guys I know use the rear brake at all. Some guys do (that are way faster than me), but I'd wager probably 90% or more never touch the rear brake. That 10-80-10% thing is great fodder for beginning riders to the street, and is kinda coachable to new people to the track, but simply, with the modern bikes, using the rear brake could be taught as an extremely rare use or not at all and would still yield excellent results.

Trust me, while Jody may not articulate his point on the web as well as some do, he knows quite well what trail braking is. Jody is an extremely talented and proficient rider, with a propensity for speaking his mind. While he may not be a good "coach" (your point "2"), he knows what he's talking about.

It may seem strange to you right now, but someone like you who is new to this part of riding motorcycles, could learn volumes from someone like Jody

Next time you come to LSTD, find me (just ask for "Tom"), and I'll introduce myself and then you to Jody. While he's not one of our "official" staffers, I'm sure he wouldn't mind offering some help in a session with you (or more).

Should be "blip". Just a sharp twist of the throttle to attempt a RPM "match" to the RPM of the downshift.

Randy, to answer your original question, it's kindof like what I explained at the track to you. Like some already figured out- you were not smoothly engaging the clutch when you down shifted.

In order to downshift a twin without any "backspin" or severe engine braking that compromises traction, blipping the throttle and/ or smoothly (relatively slowly) engaging the clutch, will seriously limit "backspin" or loss of traction from engine braking.

Takes some practice, or you could "cheat" and get a slipper clutch Personally, I learned on a middleweight single in road racing, which required a smooth engagement of downshift, which basically acts as the slipper clutch does. No choice back then, slipper clutches didn't exist!

TomLSTD,

You misinterpreted point 2. It was in response to Jody's comment, not his coaching ability. I have NO doubt that he is a good coach and a better rider. I've been on the track with him. He is very quick.

I will definitely look you up next time. I enjoy every opportunity to learn, and improve my skills.

I would love to hear the back story as to why you are so anti women!! I never knew it until reading your post on here! At the races you were so sweet and talkative! Who knew!!!

Here is a youtube of me riding an RC51 at TWS (Texas World Speedway). Not a fast pace (it was someone else's bike!), but you can hear me "blip" the throttle on a bunch of the down shifts to match the RPM and limit wheel hop in to the corner:

*disclaimer, I don't pretend to be perfect at this stuff, so take it with a grain of salt. Point is to hear the "blip" while down shifting, nothing else.

No, I understand your point, he doesn't work for LSTD, so I'm not trying to pimp him out as one of our instructors, I was trying to make a point to you that you have to ignore the "Jody-isms" of his internet persona.

I understood your points well.
