Question to everyone.

Who would be interested in getting some kind of used gear donation center started.

The whole idea came to me last night when i saw about 5-6 sportbikes in the kingwood area with helmets.. ON THEIR MIRRORS! riding in thick heavy traffic with sun glasses and just regular clothes on.

So I can understand their is a lack of information or care from new riders to get gear. Because to be honest most are buying them to save gas and look cool. If you buying something to save money its just logical that your not going to spend MORE money on stuff your not req. to have.

But I believe if we can setup some kind of information/donation center were we give out donated gear like jacket and gloves and helmets and such then maybe we can get a few more people wearing gear all the time. esp. if we had some photos and stores from people that didnt wear gear and we can show the rash/ or worse part of crashing and not wearing gear.

and maybe even get little flyers that MSF classes can hand out, and im sure MSF would try to help and support and maybe even give us a hand setting it up.

so if your interested i know i got a old mesh jacket and gloves i can donate.

man I see you trying to do good but man its a kind of a frivolous cause. most people who ride bikes can also afford gear. they choose not to. The know what can happen to them. they just choose not to believe it.

even if we gave them free gear, my takeis that they still wouldn't use it, because they just want to look cool, and pick up chicks.

Many people here including myself have given gear to fellow members, and we know that they took the gear because they wanted to use it, we understand sometimes cash is tight and we cannot always afford good gear.

If they had gear and they don't wear it, donation would just be a waste of time. I give my used gear to people that I know will use them.

well its a thought even if its not going to roll, i think the best part of the idea would be the getting the information about their like 37% of deaths on motorcycles could of be pervented if the rider was wearing a helmet (that was from the US dept of trasn. that was posted up a week ago)

There is another motorcycle website that has a special "Pay it forward" section on the forum. It is a spot where people post up if they have gear that they aren't using or someone needs a piece of gear that they can't afford. Normally the gear is listed free for pickup or whatever actual shipping is if they need it sent somewhere. It is expected that people will only post if they really need it and really can't afford it.

I would have thought that people would abuse it but they really didn't and it seems to work quite well. Obviously, I wouldn't put a $400 leather jacket on there if I could sell it but we all have some gloves that aren't worth $10 used or an old mesh jacket that is taking up space.

Just a thought.

Do what I do....I intend to pass mine along (if they fit) to friends that buy their first bike. All I ask them is to pass it along to someone else that they know in the same situation. I have 4 jackets now and at least 1 is spoken for and is going to a friend who will be a new rider.

Sounds like a great idea. If it only a few people benefit from it, then it will have been worth it.

its a good idea but the flaw with it is that not everybody renews their gear very often, gear is expensive and its hard for me to give up something that I have paid alot for. Then again, I only recently started riding, maybe somebody that has been around for a few seasons has extra gear. As far as informing them, just promote www.ride2die.com, its a great eye opener.

This is an interesting idea if it was done within the motohouston community. I like the previously mentioned pay-it-forward idea wherein there might be a dedicated motohouston forum area for requests for used gear and donation notices. Heck, I have gear that I no longer use that might work great for somebody else and selling it is a pita.

If they can afford a $3k-$8K+ sportbike, they can afford to go $.5k down on their bike choices and buy their own gear.

I like the way you think though, Gryphin. I just think it would get abused (yes I read Tiller's post), and there's no way of telling if the rider that grabs it really needs it, or just saw an opportunity to get free gear, or even turn it around and resale it. It's like giving a dollar to the guy at the stoplight. Don't know if he really needs it, or is just taking advantage of your charity. But then, if you plan to give it away anyway, then what should it matter?

Now if Motohouston, as a community, promoted a campaign to ATGATT, that may offer the greatest chance of accomplishing something good.

What if it were to replenish the gear of those who have fallen and lived to tell of it?
I have always liked the pay it forward way of life. If someone needs something I have and no longer use I will freely give.
As a matter of fact... I have a brand new scorpion helmet... never worn, still in the box with an additional tinted shield.

yup, everytime my friend tells me they want to pick up riding, I always make them look at that website before anything else. I want them to know why I spend so much on gear and why I wear it no matter what, also, they need to know whats the worse that can happen to them and if they are going to be dedicated 100% to riding.

I have old gear I would be willing to donate to others (as I have before) if I knew they were:
1.) in need of it
2.) were responsible enough to offer the gear instead of offering to disable their bike so they don't kill themselves

Let's face it - some people are just not cut out for riding a motorcycle, be it psychological (unsafe decision-making), emotional (short fuse), or physical (too short).

Also, what do you do when you give someone gear that you used for years and then they sell it? That could happen, and I personally would be furious.
