I first started running the track on a 87' VFR700FII. Great bike, the turn in was awsome and the V4 had plenty of grunt. I lowered the front about 1", put a -1 front sprocket on,SS front lines and HH front pads . It was great fun ripping past newer sport bikes. I still have it sitting in my garage. I have been kicking around putting all the lights back on it and using as a commuter bike.

Great read Grinchy, and thanks for all the comments guys. I got pictures of the bike now. It has been dropped on both sides. has 39,500 miles. And they are asking 2k for it. Here are the pics. Any input? After reading the article Grinchy put up, the miles don't seem as bad. Question is, how was it maintaned for the past 22 years? And how hard will it be to find plastics for this thing? I drive approx. 180 miles/day. I would like something I could commute on 2-3 times a week for the pretty days. All country roads and then 290 from Brenham to hempstead. Almost no traffic. I was thinking cruiser, but I have a hard time getting away from the idea of a sportbike.

that seems like alot of $ for a beat up old bike, i luv the '86 VFR750 R/W/B paint job. i really want a '86 GSXR750 to build up.

theres a site like VFRdiscussion or something like that, that would give you a better idea about parts avail.

I haven't started talking him down yet. That is asking price. I never pay asking price. But thanks, I'll go check out that site.

As much as I love that bike, for $2k in that condition, I would pass, especially if you plan to use it for commuting; and even if you bring the price down.

My first race bike was an '87 700F2. The suspension sucks azz now, but then it was the shyte.

I put a CBRF2 front end on it (the F3 front end works too) and installed a Racetech emulator/ spring kit, a Fox Shock, and 17" CBR wheels on (so I could get modern rubber). Only engine type of mod I made was a custom 4-2-1 exhaust.

Only a couple of folks make modern race bodywork for it- the stuff I used was made by Cobalt Racing (no longer in existence).

The bike is an extremely reliable power plant, and hardly needs any servicing. The valves stay in adjustment very well, and the engine makes plenty of power for the highways and byways.

The low- parts are REALLY hard to find. You have to constantly scour bone yards for parts if you want 'em. When I sold mine (for much less money and in better shape than the one you're looking at), I had 3 spare carbs, a spare engine, all the stock stuff (wheels, front end, etc), and some spare bodywork.

I was a member of a VFR owners list for many, many years, and it is a great way to get info and parts.

Personally, I would never buy a VFR for a main commuter, but I would buy one for the occasional commute and backroad rides as long as the proper suspension work has been done

Wow bringing back the memories... I traded my brand new Hurricane 600 in on the FZR1000. Only thing that sucked was you couldn't see past your chest in the mirrors. But man put a whole new meaning to fast... also responsible for my 124 in a 55 ticket & subsequent jail stay!!!!
