Question battery/charging system question

this is one area I need help in. Ok i come in yesterday oil my chain and put the R1 up i get up to leave this morning and it will hardly turn over. Come home put the charger on it after 15min it starts ride it around the block come back home turn it off and it won't start after trying it again. So back on the charger leave it for a half hour, go out start it right up leaving it running and hit the button on my charger and i see the volts go from 13.8 to 13.5 to 12.5 until it gets to 11.4 turn it off then it won't start. My question is it the battery which looks to be the one it came with when it was new(bike is a 02) or is it the stator or volt regulator i hope it's just the battery with a bad cell. I'd be thankful for any help.

So while it was running, you watched the voltage fall from 13.8 down to 11.4? Or was that while it was sitting and not running?

If the former, then I would suspect the charging system and the battery both.
If the second, get a new battery. If the battery is really 6 years old, you're on borrowed time anyway.

Left in on the charger until it was full last night. Checked the bike this morning
thinking if it's the battery it would not start or be low again, but it wasn't like that it started right up. Please tell me it's not the stator!

More than likely it is the battery...the charging system on bikes is sub-par. If a battery is drained pretty low, the system will not bring it up like a car would. The charging system is just there the maintain a charged battery.

A new battery is relatively cheap and easy, and if it's really 6 years old, you need a new one anyway. Replace it and see if the problem goes away.

Sounds like an issue with the battery. I agree with the above, a 6 year old battery is likely on it's way out even if it isn't the problem.

Sounds like it's the battery, we keep them in stock for that bike.

If you have a volt meter, check the voltage output while the bike is running.
It should be between 12.8 and 13.8 at 5000 rpm.

If you don't have a volt meter, bring the bike by and I'll check the charging system output, no charge.

as well as the Motorcycles Unlimited option, you could always have your battery tested at an autozone/o'reily store, then if a crapped out battery is the case head over to Motorcycles Unlimited for a new battery.

Just dont know how close you are to the Motorcycles Unlimited area.

I had a case somehow similar to yours. In my case it was the battery, I replaced it and the bike starts perfectly every time. replace the battery first, if your bike doesn't start anyway then it might be the stator or rectifier as other already suggested.

Angry Update still need help tell me what you think!

Ok update! I charge the battery let it sit for the whole day come from work and took it to be tested chick at ORiley's shows me the meter that it reading good 12.4 so I'm thinking $h!t. So I go home and do what Patrick said so i put the battery back in start it up hook the charger back up which has a button that will tell me how many volts it's putting out. At 5000 rpm i held it hit the button and it read 12.5 back off and let it run at 1000rpm and it's reading 11.8, then 11.7 so i try it one more time at 5000rpm and it read 12.4 then 12.5 so is it still the battery???

its suppose to be at 13.8 i believe running but not real sure, i would change the battery it is the cheaper of the two evils here and just might fix your problem or take it to a shop and they will tell you for sure

Battery had a static charge on it when you brought it to the part store to have it checked.

I would check the voltages w a DVOM not a charger when testing at 5krpms.

Still pointing to a battery. If you can continue to ride it without it killing off on you until you need to restart, then the stator is fine.

Getting alot of batteries dying this time of year.

Increase in temperature increases the resistance and the pull on an electrical system. That aside, do people put trickle chargers on their bikes during winter when they don't ride them?

I ride year round so if I have a dead battery its from leaving the LEDs on all week while Im working
