It's purely monetary. Once he sells it in a couple months or so, he is going to help me get my little GS 500 F

Tell u what, I'll give you $100 if you give me your 1/2 of the bike ownership (when/if you actually get it)...you already made a cool $20. Then I'll buy your man out and he can put that $ towards a GS....it's a win win!

I can already see the next thread about this subject....

Check out the link posted to Chris24's post about buying a used bike. There are also lots of other shops that will evaluate a bike for a small or no fee in College Station.

The things I look at are tires (wear and type), chain/ sprockets, mileage, condition of wires and electronic parts (modified? butchered? corroded? etc), paint (repainted bikes are almost always because of crash), strange marks/ gouges/ scratches on frame or structural components, throttle response, condition of brake components, condition of master cylinder(s), cables, and finally what the engine sounds like while starting and while running.

There's probably some other stuff, but as many others have mentioned, don't get the R1 for a first bike. Heck, don't get the R6 as a first bike.

I'm sure your bf is a nice guy and all, but I seriously doubt he's not going to ride it.

Why would he want this pretty bad if he is not going to ride it?

Warning you now, this sounds like a bad idea. Go find a GS (the bike you want) and get it. I can't imagine you couldn't find one of those for $3500. Motorcycles are not "investment" material. If it is being sold for that price, it is probably worth just that.

Info above is good advice give it a good once over, check all hoses, bolts, and general equipment. Start it and listen for any grinding. If possible take it for a test ride, but as you said he wasn't going to ride it. Might I remind you:
