HPD: Motorcyclist killed racing near Memorial Park

A 51-year-old man was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle while allegedly racing a car near Memorial Park on Sunday evening, the Houston Police Department said.

Witnesses in the park reported seeing the motorcyclist and the driver of a black Mercedes racing west on Memorial Drive near where the roadway split into Woodway Drive around 6:15 p.m., authorities said.

The driver of the Mercedes then cut off the motorcyclist and continued on Memorial Drive, authorities said.

The motorcyclist continued on Woodway, lost control of his bike and skid several feet down the roadway before coming to a stop in the 4400 block of Woodway, authorities said.

He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His identity is pending notification of next of kin.

Authorities said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet

IMO...there is no reason to go after someone who already put you in danger by cutting you off...I would just let him go and be glad that i'm ok...

I was out there it was a really nice HD. No helmet. Jeans and t-shirt you know the routine. He died a few minutes after I left the hospital. Bike skidded over 300 feet.

I just can't understand the short-sightedness of riding with no helmet - unless you really just don't care about dying - maybe that's it... maybe he just didn't care one way or the other! - but I doubt it. Probably just wanting to appear that way, or maybe just a low IQ after all...

I use to ride a Harley but felt awkward wearing a full face helmet when everyone else wore nothing. I compromised with myself and bought one of those half helmets that said HD in chrome. With a half helmet and a reg leather jacket, I felt accepted (barely). Now that I ride a Busa, I get to wear gloves, kevlar padded leather jackets, and full face helmets. Now that is cool.

memorial drive is so rough and loaded with large cracks in between the road sections its a bad place to be riding - let alone racing.

I ride HD ands wear a full face, I dont care if I'm accepted or not, actually would rather not be accepted by the rubs, they can keep to themselves

I read about this accident this morning. I don't remember where I read it but it was an 05 or 06 Harley. It looks like the accident happened after the road split heading west (Bike went woodway, car went memorial) so no telling if the benz even knew the bike wrecked.

RIP.
