downshift Q??

Sooo... i just purchased a bike about 3 weeks ago and i have been riding it around. when i'm in neutral at a light and i go to shift down i get a knocking noise from the tranny. i can shift through the gears and it shifts just fine.

When i go to down shift. lets say i'm in 3rd gear. i pull in the clutch and down shift. couple of seconds later i down shift into 1st and i hear he knock again and then i slow to stop at the light.

Is it me ? am i doing something wrong or is the tranny having problems.

the bike is a used 2006 r6 2000 miles

thanks in advance

youre problem seems to be a common one amongst newer riders. its called yamahitis. very contagious, but easily curable. go to your nearest suzuki dealership STAT and get a gsxr then call me in the morning.

Is it a really a knocking noise or are you confusing it with the hard shift into first and into second (when stopped)? When you are slowing down, at what speed are you trying to shift from 3rd down to 1st? If you are trying to do that above 10 miles an hour, your going to hear a crazy noise.... try pulling in the clutch when you slow but don't down shift until you get under 10mph and see if the noise still occurs... I think you are fairly new to riding and normal noises are getting to you... that bike, with kind of miles shouldn't have an issues... (unless it has been down hard, water damaged, etc.)...

what speed are you shifting into 1st at (when you're rolling up to a stop)? Most people i know that drive standard transmission vehicles shift WAY too early into first (like 15-20 mph) instead of just-barely-rolling speed.

yeah you shouldn't shift into 1st until you are at whatever speed you would be going while idling in 1st gear

It will make harsher noises when shifting from a neutral position into first since or even down to first(if you think about a crash box, that is the same shift...

U need to bypass a neutral stage when downshifting plus your rear wheel isnt moving to make the shift linkage shaft synchronize easier

maybe it is just me being paranoid ....

im down shifting to 1st at 15-10 mph.

im located on the sw side....didnt use the car and rode alllll day.

hada blast.

i did notice that the bike had a scrape on the left side while washing it today. it looks as though their are new fairings and the scratch has been painted over.

but thanks again guy for the quick response's

Shifting from N to 1st will usually clunk/jump a little. That's normal.

No need to engine brake in 1st. Keep it in 2nd until you get to 10-15mph then shift to 1st but keep the clutch in and use your brakes.
