Backfire problem on 06 kawasaki zx600j

Hi guys
I need some help with a friends bike. It is a Kawasaki 05/06 ZX600J from time to time, after driving it hard the bike starts to backfire and dies. If you are stopped and trying to lift off, the moment I let the clutch go it dies. If I give it a lot of throttle it will backfire. This comes and go's with time...
Thanks

Sounds like a number of things, but the first thing that comes to mind is a vacuum leak, closely followed by possibly loose battery connections...
