Yes at one time Texas did have a helmet law. But it was lifted. As for a helmet being like a 5mph bumper on a car thatís just the way you feel... I have seen how good a quality helmet can protect your head... Dads a race car driver... all Iím saying is laws for seat belts and for helmets save lives and I for one will not leave my house on my bike with out a lid on my head... if you choose to not ware one then thats your choice.. I just tell you I told you so when you confined to a wheel chare with brain damage or dead... Hopefully neither ever happens...

wrong

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/helmet.htm

Quote:
Effective September 1, 1997, persons at least 21 years old are exempt from wearing a motorcycle helmet if they:

have successfully completed a motorcycle safety course, or
are covered by a health insurance plan providing the person with at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of an accident while operating or riding upon a motorcycle.

Texas has had a law for many years. It was changed (relaxed) several years ago. Enforcement is another thread, altogether, IMO. Perhaps ENFORCE the laws we already have instead of creating new ones or changing existing laws. Enforcing ALL laws would make a huge difference in our society.

This one time my dad's Shadow died for some reason... so I had to go pick him up with his neighbor. We got the bike into the truck and we realized we forgot to bring the tie downs!! DOH!! Soooo.. I volunteered to "ride/balance" the bike in the flatbed until we got it back home. It was only about 5 miles so it wasn't a big deal. Well... I didn't have a helmet on, naturally, and we only went like 30mph... but the windblast on my face SUCKED. Now I've prettymuch never ridden without my helmet.. and after that I coudn't imagine want to.

Ugh... that sucked.

I like the fresh wind in my face but I have an 18" shield to deflect the debris.

I still agree with TxVrod....too many laws enforcing common sense. If they wanna pass these laws, then why not pass the first law where it makes the most sense...at the parents raising children. There is certainly no permit, mandatory school, education program, etc that certifies that you have a clue on how to raise a child. As it is now we live in a world where the dumbasses just keep makin more dumbass kids which we gotta make more laws for....hmmm is there any pattern here?

I always wear mine, and always correctly; even if I'm just riding across a parking lot (argueably more dangerous than the interstate).

Even if I rode a cruiser I'd wear a full-face helmet. I could never wear anything but... probably not even a modular helmet.

I went down at 60 miles an hour when a huge F350 pulled out RIGHT in front of me, and although I was rendered unconscious, the marks on my helmet and lack thereof on the rest of my body (I chose not to wear my jacket that day, but lucky I only got about 5 inches of road rash on my right arm and a couple scrapes on my back.

My helmet was scraped 360 degrees around.

good story, but jackets can save a lot of pain also.
