Helmet worth the $$$??

Before everybody says "yes, it's your life". Look at this $1,000 helmet.

uh, no... that helmet is not worth $1,000... that is just MSRP... the dealer price will be way cheaper.... trust me, if you have $1,000 to throw out, then you are in the wrong sport...

Hey guys remember with carbon fibre when it breaks it doesnt just break it shatters. If you have ever watched a Formula 1 car the suspension and just about the intire car is made from it. Carbon Fibre is made to go in one direction the other its like glass.

As far as safety goes, if both a $5 and a $5000 helmet are DOT/SNELL certified, they both provide a specific level of protection. The more expensive one should be better for comfort/look/noise, but that's not always the case. CF definitely has the bling factor though.

thanks for your opinion.

DOT complient means it meets a MINIMUM criteria as well as SNELL. IMO you get what you think your head is worth.

You're welcome!

That's why I said "they both provide a specific level of protection." I didn't say they were equal.

Who quantifies how much more protection you get for four times the price? The manufacturer? Yeah, right. That's not a conflict of interest right there.

The minimum protection standards of DOT and SNELL are in place to help protect the consumer by providing a spec that helmets should conform to. Too bad there isn't a system in place to rate helmet performance in specific conditions, i.e. blunt impact, sharp impact, multiple impact in the same spot, etc. You don't really have any control over what you are going to hit with your head so a general certification is probably as good as it's gonna get.

In lack of greater scientific rating system of what helmets are better than others, you just have the recommendations of other people to go on (also opinion). So in my opinion, I say just get one that is certified that you like and call it a day.

Just be sure to wear it because you are less likely to sustain severe head trauma in an accident. (which is my opinion again)

Motorcyclist did some helmet tests and found that the more expensive helmets didn't always protect better.

Clicky

Interesting reading for anyone that wears a helmet, but it's just their opinion.

^^^^ The article that Mic mentioned should be required reading before people with $700 helmets jump into this argument.
Don't get me wrong, if you wanna spend that much and like the features, graphics etc. then by all means.
It's more than my opinion, there is scientific evidence to show that a MUCH cheaper helmet can protect your melon as well or better, it depends on the kind of crash.
So, I agree with Mic, get one you like and go with it.

As for what Mattj1094 said about C/F remember that it can be made with different resins and techniques to be as stiff or flexible as the designer want it to be for a given application.

DOT, SNELL and Euro standards test all those kinds of damage....

But the analysis' I read told me that carbon was too stiff, but very tough. Like SNELL is too hard too. Plastic really works the best, but it has to be heavier, and not as cool-looking as carbon and less efficient than glass fiber... But it can take multiple hits better than the others.

I went for euro standard, personally. I think it's the only one that is not just a promise from the manufacturer, it's actually third-party verified (am I right?)

Any of them will keep you less-dead than not wearing one, and some are better than others for multiple hits (racing), or skidding.

Probably there will follow a debate on the different standards... and which is the better one. I rate them as Euro, DOT, SNELL (best to worst) for reducing concussions and saving lives (for non-racing - that's how I analyzed 'em).

Carbon-fiber is cool though - if I had the money to throw at it - I'd probably buy it, but I'm protecting my head just fine with the one I've got. Spending more money wouldn't buy me any better protection than my Shark RSI, but it can buy some pretty cool features!

ya'll also need to realize the ONLY retailer for the Z1R helmet that is touted so highly in that mag. is an outfit that also is the largest advertiser in that mag.

conflict of interest?

get what your head is worth.

I don't know where you got that info but I see a LOT more ads for other helmets than Z1R in Motorcyclist mag.

I'm just sayin' that the idea you get what you pay for is not always true.

You can spend $30,000 on a limited prod Ducati or MV and still not have a "better" bike than some of the others.
Are they worth it? If you think so then they are.

Is a Teutal built OCC chopper "better" than a stock Harley? The answer is yes to them that thinks so.

is my BMW venting machine (kevlar outer, $400+) jacket more protection then a joe rocket phoenix ($115), i'm betting it is.

so what kinda lid do you wear?

often times i hear people giving accolades to cheaper helmets, that they don't wear...........

i mean a Z1R is less then $100?
