All it takes is a quick glance at the running list of people who have gone down this year.

We also are having a huge influx of new riders due to the gas prices, most with little or no training/experience.

So you have an inexperienced rider who falls prey to target fixation and lack of knowledge in how to countersteer, and ends up turning into exactly what they wanted to avoid.

And those walls on overpasses are only 3-4 foot tall, so the mass of your body is above it if you happen to smack it at speed.

It's not justthe looking part. If you have driven a cage your whole life, your brain and reaction is to turn right to go right.

So in a panic situation, when you need to go left to avoid that car pulling out, you end up turning left and steer the bike right, into what you were trying to avoid.

Same thing in this case.. you start to run wide in the turn, and fixate on the wall, and instinctively turn left to get away from it. Which stands the bike up and turns hard right, into it.

I don't ride enough to be relaxed in my reactions, so every time I get on my bike I force myself to practice countersteering right out of the box and get my mindset back where it needs to be.

I was working an accident with LifeFlight on the ground loading the victims and an idiot drove literally through scene. Under the wings of the helo and extremely close to the copter. He didn't hit anybody, thank the almighty! But, geez! I chased after him and guess what....Drunk!
