Actually you guys are all wrong. From what i understand its do to tradition.

Motor patrol had its origins from the mounted patrol, therefore the similarity in protective gear. Full face helmets and jackets etc, are a necessity in all weather types, weather hot or not, its just not allowed right now according to their regulations.

More motor divisions are moving to full face modular helmet and full gear... Its just hard to change tradition. You could write the local police department. I'm sure those riders would wear better gear if it was allowed.

They wear bulletproof vests. Think that's some protection. Plus the full-length gauntlets. Plus some padding. Plus they're basically riding small cars. Plus they take classes on how to crash a bike. Plus... I'm all out of plus.

Our department did a comparison of Harleys vs. Hondas vs. BMWs for patrol bikes. Even though the Honda and BMW are clearly better bikes with better maintainence records (cheaper in the long run) the powers-that-be went with Harley because they are "cooler".

Over time, the Honda and BMW would actually be cheaper since they last longer and don't require NEAR as much service.
thanks....straight from the source! nuff said....it's all bout the "cool factor"
