What's the law with trucks and people in the bed?

Just like the title says.

What really is the law? I'm in a situation where its 8-10 of us (all over 18) going from Houston to San Antonio, now rather then taking 2 cars I was just thinking of taking my truck and throw the guys in the bed of it?

They don't mind and are looking forward to it but I wanted to make sure what the law is, I'd hate to get a ticket for something like that.

So what is the law? Age limit? Number of people? Sitting/standing? etc etc.

Thanks

I'm usually wrong but I think if they are under 18 the driver is responsible and if they are over 18 each one is responsible for themselves.
In either case I don't think it's legal.

Well, my best friend lost his older sister because she was riding in the bed of a truck. Someone threw eggs at the truck, startled the driver, swerved and hit a guard rail and she was thrown from the bed. How much do you like your friends. Not a day in I'd get caught riding in the back of a truck at highway speeds, regardless of the law. Just my 2 cents.

I stand corrected. (I knew I would be wrong)

If they are over 18 load 'em up and hit the road. 'Course if you have an accident they or their families might make you more responsible than you ever thought you could be.
It's a bad idea but you are all big boys.

Is it worth risking someone's life to save a few bucks on gas? Not to me.

Maybe it's because I grew up out in the sticks and we rode in the backs of trucks ALL the time, but I sure don't have a problem with it.

Doesn't sound like it should be any more dangerous than riding a motorcycle.

I think ridin down some country road in the back of a truck is cool, but 75mph down the interstate for a couple of hours to San Antonio is different.

As long as nothing goes wrong it's just a long uncomfortable ride but if there is an accident it would be an ugly tragedy. Maybe if everyone chips in on gas it would be worth it to take a couple of cars.
