Let's start a healthy debate.. (trucks)

Yes yes, I know - I've started this topic twice before in the past year or so, and both times ending up buying a sports car. What can I say, those test drives (trucks) scare me, at heart i'm always going to be a sports car guy. But its finally about time I get a truck.

I currently travel with a 6X12 loaded with two full size bikes and equipment, towing with a 4 cyl. camry has it perks , but its becoming dangerous and I get waay too many looks at me when i enter the track . I mean the trailer weighs as much (loaded) if not more then the car .

So I've decided it to buy a truck (this time I promise I won't end up with a sports car ).

So here's the debate, I've done some extensive research and have made up my mind on the following:

1) The truck's gotta be full size, (crew cab/super cab/4 doors basically).
2) The truck's gotta be gasoline, (not diesel - not open for debate).
3) The truck's gotta be a V8 (4.6 or above).
4) The truck's gotta be black in color, open to any interior (leather/cloth).
5) The truck's gotta be 2wd (no plans of offroadin`).
6) The truck's gotta get atleast 16-17 mpg (city) & 20-21 (hwy).

My price range is $12,546 or below .

Now having said all that I would like your opinions on any trucks that fit the above 6 criterias or atleast 5 of them. Truck could be import or domestic, while shopping for trucks this time I have decided I will not TEST DRIVE them, that always leaves me off and I can't wait to get back into a sports car.

I would primarily like your opinions on the following cars:
1) Ford F150 1999-2003
2) Dodge Ram 1500 2002-2005
3) Chevy Avalanche

Thanks in advance - and yes, this time its for real "real"!

PS: My birthday is April 10th, so i'm thinking with tax money and several overtime hours, I'd like to make my decision and seal the deal in time...

fwiw....the newer tacomas and frontiers are pretty beefy for a "compact" truck...

my taco has a 4.0 24v v-6 240 hp 280 lb ft of torque, same power as the original tundras with v-8, is rated for almost 1500 lbs in bed or tow 6500...

I get decent fuel economy and is still nice to drive...

you might be able to get an 05 in your price range......

I would also consider the older tundras.....

Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel engine
7k lb truck that gets 19.5 mpg city (hand calculated), 22 hwy
and will still pull your house down. Doing some research mine is on the high side for fuel economy.

Yeah diesel is about to hit $4/gal but gas aint far behind. I think eventually diesel will get back down below the price of gas....hopefully.

i have had a few trucks, and personally am in love with the 04 F-150 that i bought new in early 04 when the new body came out.

my 4.6l gets decent gas mileage and tows a 18ftish bass boat with no problems.

hauls my bike very good also.

Guessing you won't hit your mileage targets with the other criteria. I get a very best of about 15mpg city and might be able to get 20 driving the speed limit on the highway (don't know, never tried it) with a 4.6/auto extended cab. You might be able to get 16-17 with a regular cab manual.

Yea but if you look at the above criteria - i have to stay under $12,000.

Guys, I appreciate all the opinions, but please remembers its only useful if you stay within the criteria.

I wish I had more money to spend and then those above options would be between the F250/08 Tundra/08 8ft Titan. But at this point, I'm not willing to part with the Repsol or the Mazda Rx8 - so my budget forcefully has to stay low.

Thanks again for your opinions, I still have a few days before making my decision.

My moms Durango R/T with the 5.9L gets 12 MPG average!

I have owned alot of vehicles. Of all the choices out there, stick with a chevy or GMC crewcab with the 5.3 minimum! If you really want a nice rig, get the loaded out vortec max with the 6.0L. Very nice trucks that last!

the avalanche has a coil over rear suspension and has body roll at higher speed and fast turning. im a chevy guy id say get a silverado in a heart beat, ive drove fords for work for many years and they just dont holdup well to abuse like a chevy . i abuse the out of my trucks , dodges are notorious for rear differential and tranny problems. tundras are a good choose as well.

Just bought an 03 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab Hemi 5.7 and I love it. We picked it up last Wed. night, and have no complaints what so ever (other than it drinks gas like I breathe air, but its what we wanted and we are happy, you have to sacrifice sometimes to get it). I was always in the same position, kept saying I needed a truck and always bought the sports car or something else. Well we finally did it, and I couldn't be happier with what we have.

We paid 13.900 and it doesn't meet your fuel requirements.
