registration & paying taxes

I got the new bike from out of state, bought insurance & got it inspected...now just waiting for the bill of origin to be mailed to me (they hold it until check clears) so I can register & get the title.

So when I get this bill of origin, I just bring it in & pay my taxes (which will be based on the cost of the bike). Does the other state (dealer) report the price of the bike? The cost of that bike in Houston will be 10K plus...however, I got it through a dealer's hookup for a heck lot less (brand new). I don't have any "documentation" to prove that though...Will they believe me if I tell them it's 6k or do I have to talk to the dealer and generte some type of proof before hand?

They use some sort of 3rd party to figure out the cost of your tax. They use KBB or some sort of thing to find out its value, get 80% of that price and charge 6.25% on that 80% value

My percentages might be off, but they do use a 3rd party to figure out the price.

I may be wrong about using a third party.

I fail at this post.. some one else answer please.

Why wold you not expect a new motorcycle dealer to provide you with docummentation of the purchase (i.e., sales contract and receipt for payment) just because the transaction crosses state lines? Ask them to send you these things.

How did you get it inspected before registration?

You dont need any paper work to prove the price you paid. Just tell them.

inspection MUST be done prior to "out of state" registration. you need the VI-30A (out of state) form to register it in texas.

and as stated, the state of texas has that new law "presumptive value" or something like that.....to keep people from skimpin on the taxes. if you paid within 80%+ of the value, they will charge you the taxes on the "presumptive value".

Thx guys, KBB said 7700, 80% of that is 6K...which is around what I paid so I guess I just tell them 6K straight up then.
