i got my first job offer

ok so i'd like to thank Jet, Flip, Hanz, RSVR, and all others for their support in this thread: http://www.motohouston.com/forums/sh...t=48460&page=2

i had two interviews and my first job offer... So my current job in academia pays 50K. The job i am looking to take is in SF bay area (yay!) and it will start at 75K for the first three month but then will increase to about 100 (with the potential of 200K in a few years)

tomorrow i have another interview and will try to get an offer from that company too - it is in houston. I'll ask them to pay 80.

Both jobs are very similar - work for a small software company helping their customers understand their needs and communicate those needs to the engineers (for "office space" fans - its the job of the guy that said "I have people skills, what the f*ck is wrong with you people")

I lived (professionaly) through the downturn of 2001-02 and this is nothing like that. I know banking and real estate industries are struggling but everything else is booming... I am going to try to get into energy sector too...

thanks guys!

this was freudian slip. i absolutely think that the bay area is the best place to live in the world but houston grew on me so i am not really going to jump on the very first offer

P.S. hey i know this is exhibitionism... but that's what we, all pw, are - the exhibitionists...

good on you!!

don't forget to compare cost of living between the two regions. 50K here will get you more than 75K there as far as housing goes.

+1...Houston is one of the most affordable large cities to live in. S.F. will be much more expensive. Some friends of the wife and I moved to San Diego and they told us the average house prices are $600,000. I don't know that S.F. is any better. It's not that all the houses there are mansions but the $$$ per square foot is much higher.

Congratulations Alex!

Just weigh the pros and cons should you get both offers. I got a feeling you'll fit right in with S.F., and I don't mean the factor.

There are two things I would consider between these 2 cities:
1) Cost of Living and your relative income,
2) Standard of Living and your preferential lifestyle.

i lived there so i know exactly how much of to expect...

high cost of living in there reflects mostly in housing. we take things like big houses, yards, big kitches with dishwashers for granted in here...
The best thing about bay area is the nature and weather. It could be generalized about the whole californae. The mountains the trees the ocean! Also i still have a few friends living in there... And you are right, the people in cali are politically a lot more like me... In fact their "alternative" radio is christian right wing just as our alternative radio is 90.1 pacifica. Liberals are very much a mainstream in SF...
