Looking for a new carrer path for my wife

Anyone on the west side of Houston looking for or know of a place looking for a dedicated employee? She's looking to get into a starting position doing administrative type work. She has many skills that any employer would be happy to have.

LMK if anyone has any ideas.
BTW... Closer to home the better (We live in Katy off of Grandparkway)

You need to talk to your buddies and see what the engineering firms you deal with are doing. They have been paying for people to be trained as drafters and paying good money on top of that.

for someone starting out? I think it is a good amount. What sounds better;

40K a year doing admin work for Varco
or
30k a year going to Houston City Personell

Remember, she is needing entry level admin work.

Screw the entry level . Sure if you are 18 or 20 but, starting at the bottom after 30 is a long way to the top. Find one of these places desperate to fill positions such as the drafting field. You will be brought in at better position and be better suited for future advancement because once you are in you are stuck with there procedures.

+1 she will get more exposure this way while she reintroduces herself into the workforce again and gets some leads on better positions. The best time to look for a new job is when you already have one.

Please refer to my reading comprehension thread in the Mod Hut.

I would avoid entering into a large company at an entry level position... just me but hey i would rather not work the next 20 years of my life to just get up to a decent pay. What I am saying is if you target some career paths that are hurting for people you can get in at a higher position. Such as Computer Aided Drafting has been for the last few years. It is the same as IT jobs were 10 years ago. Or, you can answer phones, type letters and sort mail for years to come but, since I have personal knowledge of this individual I think she could apply herself in one of the better paying areas.

My wife is 33 yrs old
She's worked with the same company for 13 years in August.
She works programs:
All professional versions of:
(hates the student teacher versions....)
Microsoft Publisher, Access, word, excel, powerpoint all 2003 (advance on all of these...designing forms and databases for Access for the entire company office personnel to use.

OSAS - Open System Account Software

Website Admin www.ashtoncompany.com

Maketing and sales
She even converts the oldies Lotus 123, Paradox 13,word perfect into newer programs such as Microsoft access etc...

We're looking for a company that will offer paid vacation / sick time / 401k etc... the company she's working for now doesn't offer much for personnel time. Each and every person in the company gets 2 wks vacation at the companys discression as for when and 8 major holidays.

Varco is a work horse, and I see them as well as the rest of the oilfield blowing up for many years to come.
Do you know if the Varco on Dairy Ashford and Clay are hiring?

40k is a major pay cut for us but we're looking to obtain a position where we can enjoy each others time and not when the company feels fit.

I'll keep my eyes open for positions she might be interested in. Sometimes you take a paycut if the situation warrants it, i.e. better benefits or better "working atmosphere". Since our field is booming, she might find something that pays decent AND gives her 3 weeks of vacation year...plus all the free coffee she can drink.
