OK cleaned the carb and adjusted the mixture screw. Did nothing. I am going to readjust the valves when it cools down and recheck the timing. It only sputter on the top end of the RPMs.

Cool. Fixed the backfire

Some questions:
What size carb is it?
Did you switch the CDI box or are you still using the stock one?
Have you moved the needle up or down?
Did you install that pipe yet?

The stock CDI box has a 9800RPM rev limiter. Is it possible that you're hitting the limiter?

fiddy

the 88 will spin up WAAAY faster and with the stock cdi you will hit it very fast but it might not feel like your hitting a revlimiter more like a sputter...

I have checked the valves 3 times now. I have replaced the head gasket. Thats was part of the problem. I have cleaned the carb. Checked the timming 3 times. No it just runs like . No more loud pops. That was from the head gasket. I am pulling my hair out. Thank you Patrick.

Yeah I took off the old airbox. Said to myself. "remember to tighten that back down because the ground wire is there" Guess what I forgot.

clean the paint off the frame where the ground contacts, or you will have the same problem later.
