I've been curious as to wether that will actually result in reduced prices...
with the two dif formats etc, more competion thus lower prices so each side will try to get the other to purchase that format. With the 'end' to HD coming into sight...and blue ray being king. Dunno if I trust prices to come down soon...

well, I've already seen it in the movies, and a little in the players. for example, sony's next blu-ray player that is coming out in a couple of months is going to be prices at $299. which means that the models that are out right now at $399 will obviously be dropped in price lower than $299.

According to Sony it'll be at least 2009 before we start seeing $200.00 blue ray players.

So, for now that still kinda pegs the PS3 as the best bet... granted sony is working on some new models of the Ps3. How soon they'll actually release them, and will they really impact the $ of the older units to any real degree?

dont know where you heard that ... but here is what I read ...

link --> http://www.crn.com/hardware/206901990 <--

March 05, 2008
Sony CEO Says $299 Blu-ray Player Is Coming This Year
Blue-ray may have won the format fight against HD DVD, but prices for Blu-ray players won't be dropping through the floor. Instead, they will sink slowly and steadily, said Sony Electronics CEO Stan Glascow Wednesday. Prices will drop to $299 this year from $399 and up and reach as low as $200 next year, Glasgow said at a roundtable event in New York, according to Gizmodo.

"I don't think $200 is going to happen this year. Next year $200 could happen. We'll be at a $300 rate this year. $299 will happen this year," Glascow said, Gizmodo reported.

Glascow also said he doesn't expect cheap Chinese-made players to step in and undercut prices because the Blu-ray Association, which oversees the Blu-ray standard, has not given licenses to any Chiense manufacturers. "Will there be Chinese players? Yes. (But) We don't need to drive that and hand the technology over" any time soon, Glasgow said at the roundtable, according to the New York Times.

Sony's Playstation 3, whose shift to Blu-ray played such an important role in the Blu-ray victory, will continue to see changes, he said. Asked if there will be another PlayStation with Blu-ray built-in, Glasgow said, "there's going to be continual evolvement in the PlayStation line," Gizmodo reported.

Movie downloads, which garner a lot of buzz, should not undercut Blu-ray, Glascow added. While movies still take hours to download, discs are still popular.

"People like owning packaged media," he said, according to the New York Times. "Downloading will build over time, but it could take ten years for significant penetration."

Hence, it'll be 2009 before we see Blue-ray players 200 or under.

I'm in the dilemma myself. I vote the PS3 because with a bluetooth capable keyboard, I can also use the wireless and browse the internet on TV.
But I've decided to wait on 45nm cell processor, which will probably be around summer.

no use in waiting, price wont be any diff and just like the ps1 the olser model ps3's are sturdier and have more functionality (og 60 gigs have gone up in ebay price a little because of the hardware thats in it )
