I really need to hook up with you and learn a few things about lights. This is the biggest thing killing me.

lol. just depends what future use one plans on. we have one of those $400 sony cameras. and by itself it does ok. The med. format mamiya does great. the d300 blew us away! The sony won't trigger the lights because there is no hot shoe, not remote plug and the muti-flash triggers the lights too early. It takes TOOOOOOOO long to recycle and there is next to nothing for using it manually. so yes cheaper cameras can take OK shots but if you want a great camera for the price and plan on shooting motorcycles in action I would go with the better camera. so yes I say it is the 600ss equal. the d3 being the liter bike but like I said before. the d300 is near the same camera as the d3 just without the weatherproof body. Since our stuff is studio for now we saw no reason to by a weatherproof body. also getting good software for handling those pics is important. working with 16bit RAW files are far and away better looking than the same pic in 8 bit JPEG... cheap cameras have no RAW format feature.

I am still learning myself. My wife is the expert and even she is still learning from her aunt which is a master photographer.

I have to agree 100% with the idea of... If you want to take action shots you need to get the most camera you can afford.
