Out of the ones you listed the D80 is top but, with out the lenses to get the best out of it then it would be over board.

are you a new photog?

if so a D40X would be more then sufficient, if you plan to stay in it then a D80 would be a better investment, more then enough for beg to intermed. photog's. my friends a staff photog for the chronicle and he doesn't have a D300 YET.

we recently bought a used D80 for the cost of a new D40x, her first real camera, overkill but we got a deal. next will be the SB-600 flash (~$200) and the 18-200 VRII lens (~$800), currently have 18-70mm lens, need more depth.

D40x = SV
D80 = 600SS
D300 = 1k

order from B&H photog for good service and price

I have a D40, and have found hundreds of different lenses. Cheaper than Canon as well. I love my D40.
+1

And I can;t see how the extra 3 megapixels would make the photos any better.

Some reviews say that the d40 pictures come out better than the d40x.

Unless you're wanting 20 foot photos or somethiing.

prob. w/ D40/40X is that the lens has to be auto focus, thus more expensive, where a D80 the camera body has the auto focus part, so lenses are cheaper.

"Basics of Photography
With all the advances in photography, including digital cameras, you may wonder if there is any point in learning to operate a conventional film camera. Well, it's still the only way to produce a 'photograph' with all its unique visual appeal. If you are confused by camera functions such as F-stops, depth of field, shutter speeds, exposure values–this class is for you. Learn basic camera functions that apply to both digital and film cameras. Understand photo composition and recognize the qualities of objects or people that make them photogenic. Each student is asked to complete a photo project that is shared with the class at the fourth meeting. NOTE: This class is intended for students who have a 35mm or digital camera that can be manually operated. If you own a camera, please bring it to class. You will not be admitted to subsequent classes if you miss the first class.

get the d40 with 2 kit lenses and just like anything get to know that stuff to its full potential before stepping up.

thats what im doing at least. no point in buying tons of super expensive glass if you dont know how to take advantage of it.

like racerx's analogy , do you want to get a gsxr 1k as 1st bike or learn on sv

i think ritz/wolf camera has glasses , but i think its best to learn out in the field with someone who knows or trial and error.

well I beg to differ. we run a photography business and can tell you the d300 is bad . Yes lenses make a big difference, but the camera is the beginning of it all. We were using a med. format mamiya 1000s for a awhile but could no longer get what we wanted out of it and made the leap to dslr. with the equipment we have; lights, soft boxes, musslins and now the d300, the portraits look completely different. ultimately one has to know how to take a picture and get the lighting right.
