HIV infected donors can donate a kidney but it is only for HIV infected recipients
They are on a different list as well than non infected people.

how it works

A doctor (with the help of some life gift members) usually harvests the kidney. form there it is taken to the life gift office. where the artery is trimmed and some of the fat taken off. then it is put on a pump so that the kindey is tested for its performance and kept alive while life gift tires to find a match for it. once a match is found, the kidney is take to the hospital (usually st lukes) by life gift and is transplanted by a doctor (usually one of the van buren brothers)

also the estimated market value of a kidney is $20K

feel free to correct me where i am wrong on how the procedure works.

my family were not let in without visa. so facing the dilemma of them being illegally here or us being apart i chose the latter. I was extremely frustrated wtih US immigration laws and completely empathize with many illegal immigrants - as they could have been my parents...

The hippocratic oath is what's supposed to keep doctors from hastening your death to harvest your organs. among other things.

I sympathize with you, many family friends of ours have had to deal with all of US immigration's redtape BS first hand. Often times families do get split up, it's crappy, I know.

I think they probably take whatever they want even if your not a donor, who would know the difference. I know it's horrible to think that way but with the medical field being what it is and organs being in such high demand it would not suprise me.
