the irony of it all ... the Oscars ...

So I'm watching a tad bit of the Oscars ... and before I get completely sick of watching it ... I observe that there's probably enough money in jewelry, designer dresses, suits and presenter gift bags in that auditorium to end hunger in a moderatly sized 3rd world country.

true...

also if we were to give up watering our lawns the saved fresh water would probably be enough to satisfy driking water needs of some dried up country somewhere..

we can take this point further: instead of living in private houses with land live in tiny apartments boxed together - that would get rid of homelessness etc etc...

I guess my point is that we *are* the society of excesses but i think i like it better this way everyone draws the line somewhere though... I think for me i'd draw the line at a point where in order to satisfy our need for excesses we kill other people... although one can make an arguement that someone somewhere has to die in order for me to be able to water my lawn anyways and there is no way to avoid it... ah i donno man

I just hate it when the Hollywood elite tell us to be better people and what not when they live lives of extreme excess and can never seem to see the irony of their "message" wrt their own lifestyles.

it is ridiculous how much money some of these people have...too bad they don't make better use of it sometimes. oh well, there's a reason they have that much money and we don't.

The word is OPPULENCE!

And I agree completely, their lifestyles are beyond excessive. Their entire existence has come down to who can spend the most money on the simplest thing.

Isn't that how we all are?

It is all about keeping up with (and eventually beating) the Jones.

Sadly so my friend, as the budhist say (i think); the root of all evil is desire, there's always something newer and sexier than what we have. They believe if you eliminate 'desire' then you will find true contentment.......but thats not what this thread is about.

I think the point here is, these celebrities forfit their right to tell everyone to be better people and help one another, when they live in a manner that says otherwise.

You are correct. that is part of निर्वाण (Nirvana) the perfect peace of mind. want nothing, which wont cause anger, jealousy, and other afflictive states of mind.

I agree with you on the other point wholeheartedly. People preaching peace, love and simplicity from their ivory castles make no sense.
