Bike(s):
2004 ninja 250

idling high

2004 250 ninja, bought bike after it had been sitting up and got it running. Unfortunately now I am still having 2 problems, when I first start it and shift into first, it kicks. Just wondering if that is normal, it never happened with the rebels in MSF. Also, after I've been riding it only a few blocks it idles at about 5k rpm , it only does this after I have ridden it and never when it first starts up. I have yet to take it on a longer ride in case something serious is wrong with it.

A little bit of a kick is normal. Is your clutch out of adjustment?

The choke is going to cause the bike to run rich (and at a lower RPM) when you first start it up. After it warms up, the moisture in the carb is gone and it will run leaner and at a higher RPM. Sounds like your idle is set too high or choke is sticking. Just a guess though.
