when is someone ready for a fast bike?

I look at this and my mouth waters:
http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/573442386.html

I have 3m/3k experience on my shadow. I suspect you guys will say 1000rr is too fast for me. what about 600rr? can 600 be responsibly ridden with someone with my experience level?

Any Bike can be ridden at any ridding level...It is more about your maturity and judgemnt. The question becomes do you fill responsible enough to start off at posted speed limits until you become more familure with the ride (knowing your limits).

if we all wanted what our hearts desired then i would be on a ducati. lol start with the 600 then work your way up! Who knows you might end up liking the 600 better than the 1000, but you will never know until you try it out

i just brag man... just pour bullsh*t with my mouth... but i am actually trying to worry about my safety and etc. When it comes to drinking - well I admit things can be improved there... but i recognize this as my weakness - give ya that. At least i try to follow the formula: have N drinks, wait N-1 hours before riding.

I remembered when I traded my shadow 600 for a cbr600, it was a completely different feeling... like a big bicicle with an engine. I had no trouble getting used to it the first time I rode it home. I frankly don't think a 1000 will give you much trouble[given your exp level] so long as you have reasonable throtle control and judgement.
