ok if it's got fuel, re-orient the thing and burn the rest of it off having it head for the deep black of space or something. :-)

I say we send a rocket with a grappling hook to do that, just keep going once it connects. Why couldn't they actually do that with a shuttle? Is there no way to get ahold of it since it doesn't have control now?

And you are saying a gaseous substance will somehow survive the fall???

What bothers me is the hypocrisy of this thing:
When China did the same thing our media were calling them monsters racing to the space wars... But when it comes to us doing the same thing - we are just worried about the population and the hydrazine exposure!

Why not come out clear and say: we are testing out sattelite shooting down capabilities?
Yes, because the Fuel cell would survive it...

If the missile shot is successful, officials said, much of the debris would burn up as it fell. They said they could not estimate how much would make it through the atmosphere. They said the largest piece that would survive re-entry would be the spherical fuel tank, which is about 40 inches wide—assuming it is not hit directly by the missile.

Besides, IF in fact there is some risk of highly-classified, highly important documentation which somehow jeopardizes our national security, I would very much rather them shoot the thing down than it fall into the hands of any our many enemies. There IS some risk of this as mentioned in a recent Reuters article...

yeah ok i read the article... I dont know.. maybe they are right. and the fuel tank is made of some superprotective material... it's possible... but you know as someone said - other satellites have fallen before and noone cared...

this one is a spy satellite and the whole story just smells like NASA is testing out the star war technology - speed, but just call it by its name!

Well yeah, but those other satellites, as you-or whoever- mentioned before, those weren't spy satellites which goes to the latter point of the above quoted message- the message of mines that you quoted. I'd rather we shoot it down than information we don't want others to have, to have. But I hear ya, anything is possible, and if they are infact just testing out a missile defense program, which is entirely possible, likely even, then fine- what harm does it cause that isn't already in place? If nothing else, it is a presentation of our capability to defend against incoming missiles and further, the futile nature ingrained in attempting to use such a method against us. A deterrent, if you will...we have nukes, why not a missile defense!?

And that I can agree with wholeheartedly

caveat: I just can't pass judgment until I can verifiably say you are bullshitting me
