I have PCOS...

For those that don't know, I have recently been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)...

This is actually quite relieving to me because it helps explain ALOT of what I've been going through.

WEIGHT GAIN!!!
This is the issue that I have been struggling with the last 2 years. In June of 06, there was an unexplained weight gain, causing me to gain about 10 lbs in only 4 weeks. This totally blindsided me. I hadn't changed my diet/eating habits, I had been eating the way I normally eat, but wow.

PCOS leads to insulin resistence - symptoms of IR include:
Weight gain, fat storage, difficulty losing weight. For most people, too much weight is too much fat. The fat in IR is generally stored around the midsection in both males and females

Depression. Because carbohydrates are a natural "downer," depressing the brain, it is not uncommon to see many depressed persons who also have Insulin Resistance.

It can also lead to type II diabetes and diabetes runs rampant in my family so that is a VERY scary though.

increased hair growth on stomach, chin, back, tops of fingers, etc
granted, i don't have hair on my back or anything like that, i have noticed an increase in hair grown on my chin and a LITTLE on my stomach. I know that sounds gross, but I'm just putting it out there.

irregular periods
my periods have never been regular, in fact, just recently, I went almost over 2 months without one.

acne
i don't have full blown acne, but I do get occasional breakouts...

Anyway, sorry if this was TMI for you guys but I wanted to put that out there and say that I'm not fat for no reason lmao :P

that's only some of the symptoms that I've been experiencing, but there are alot more where that came from

that is my blog on myspace, so I thought that I would re-post for those that don't have myspace. Not that anyone cares, but I figured some of the ladies of MH might

Of course we care! You're our ONLINE friend- that doesn't make you not real! I'm sorry to hear about your disorder- is there treatment for you?

I think Meaner may have gone through something like this, also.

Aww. I recently found out my self that I have cyst on my right over and it caused me enough pain that I thought I had kidney stones and it put me in the hospital. That stuff sucks. Do you know if it can cause infertility? Just wondering, I know over a long period of time, it can cause me to be infertile.

^ better knock one out now just incase.... Honestly that is my biggest fear, not being able to have kids. I would feel like i would be missing out on one of life's greatest privileges and pleasures.

I am with you on that. I want to have kids so bad but I am going to finish school first. I really cannot wait to bring my own child into this world. One of my very own.

yes, PCOS can cause infertility. It prevents the egg from being released. In fact, the follicles are actually what causes the cysts on the ovaries...

Treatment, to alleviate symptoms (especially insulin resistence) is to be put on Metformin (Glucophage) which will help regulate my insulin and I believe that will assist me w/weight loss. I've been on diet and exercise for over a month now w/little result.

Used to I would have no problem losing weight, I could just stop eating and drop 5 - 10 lbs. But now, not so much. My body doesn't know what to do with the excess insulin, so it turns it to fat.

#1 indicator of insulin resistance is increased fat around the midsection. Consequently, this also leads to type II diabetes - which is where I seem to hold/gain all of my weight

I think me becoming a nurse also helps me to understand this disease.

how did she find out? Is she insulin resistant? Did she have problems losing weight?

when did you become a nurse? RN?

she found out when she was in early in the nursing program.

yes and yes, and we do have difficulty getting prego.

brutus it's long term and never goes away, pretty much it leads to diabetes, my wife is borderline already.

It will never go away, currently there are only treatments, no cures.

Sorry to hear this Amber. Hopefully there is something you can do to help with it. At least you know what is wrong now. My mom had a hysterectome (sp?) and went 7 years on the wrong hormones. She went through many of the symptoms you explained, and when she found the right ones it made tons of difference.

So have you found out, can this be assisted by medication, or is there an actual fix?
