The resort town of Steamboat Springs, Col. is a motorcyclist's dream this month as it plays host to the Annual Steamboat Springs Motorcycle Week. The event is one of only two authentic motorcycle road races held in North America.

The events are varied. There's the Vintage Trial, which puts pre-1974 motorcycles against each other on a rugged natural terrain. Classic dirt bikes compete in the Vintage Motorcross. And classic bikes take to the town's streets for the Vintage Road Races, where racers compete on Steamboat Springs' winding, 1.8-mile mountain street course at the base of the Steamboat Ski Area, complete with dangerous corners and fast straight-aways.

For those who prefer a tamer ride, there's the Vintage Motorcycle Road Rally. Riders climb aboard their classic cycles and take a tour of the breathtaking fall countryside for a look at the colorful foliage.

The above happens each year in September.

Get with an endurance team and your cost will be minimal. Main reason I suggest this for new guys is because you actually learn what it is like to have bikes right next to you in the corners, etc... before you end up on the track with the big boys and cause an incident at much higher speeds because someone spooked you.

Or, get out there with the big boys, cause a few wrecks, send people to the hospital, you know all the fun stuff.... your choice.

They used to do that in Austin (race on the streets) It was part of a week long celebration called Aquafest.
They raced go carts and bikes throught the streets and had boat races on Town Lake which is also (not surprisingly) in town.

I ran there one year, it was pretty cool, of course I sucked but it was fun. That ended in 1998 I think.
