Healthy Living Thread

I figure this tread will either do very well or fail miserably.

I know we have a number of people on here who make efforts to stay healthy. I've seen one member post about his significant weight loss.
I've seen one or two say they were personal trainers.
I know a lot of you have some knowledge about healthy eating, weight lifting, all sorts of methods of exercising, and healthy activities/hobbies.

I figure some people may want a centralized place they could go to for advice or ideas.

Here is a quiz to get you started:

1. The BMI says I am obese, should I be worried?
2. I eat ground turkey instead of ground beef, it is healthier. true or false?
3. Women genetically have less fat then men. true or false?
4. If I eat a fat free diet I can't get fat. true or false?
5. Are you familiar with the term Glycemic Index?
6. Sit-ups are bad for you. true or false?
7. Men have stronger abdominal muscles than women. true or false?
8. When does your body burn the highest percentage of calories using it's stored fat?

Ok, that's just to get some stuff started.

I hope others chime in with information and questions.

I'll post my answers tomorrow to these questions tomorrow.

Mike

1. The BMI says I am obese, should I be worried?
yes, you should make a concentrated effort to get fit and healthy

2. I eat ground turkey instead of ground beef, it is healthier. true or false?
depends on the fat to lean ratio

3. Women genetically have less fat then men. true or false?

4. If I eat a fat free diet I can't get fat. true or false?
false

5. Are you familiar with the term Glycemic Index?
not familiar, but i have read about it

6. Sit-ups are bad for you. true or false?
i know that if you do sit ups correctly they are really good, but most people do them wrong

7. Men have stronger abdominal muscles than women. true or false?

8. When does your body burn the highest percentage of calories using it's stored fat?

i use www.sparkpages.com to keep track of what i eat, how much i weigh, what calories i burn, etc.

This thread may be just that. I don't know everything but there is a wide variety of people on MH, I'm sure many people place a higher those topics than I do, they are all good things.

That is why I started this thread, to find out who knows what and what peoples interests are.

Thanks for the link, I'll check that out.

As far as organic foods go, I'm happy just getting people to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables.

In that case, I'll answer that question right away.

For most people it will be when they are sleeping. You see, I said PERCENTAGE of calories from fat.

The human body is very smart and efficient. Of the three methods the body has for burning energy, using fat stores is the least efficient. However, since fat is also the largest source of energy the body has, it will default to it as much as possible.

Therefore, when the body can afford to convert fat to energy for almost all of its needs is also the time when your needs are at it's lowest.

Now, before I get people thinking they should sleep themselves skinny I will explain this a bit more so it makes sense.

A quick example:

If you are sleeping you are burning very few calories per hour. Lets say 50.
IF your body is converting enough fat to make up 90% of that, you are burning 40 fat calories per hour.

If you are running you may be burning 1000 calories an hour. Your body may only be using fat for 40% of those calories, a much lower PERCENTAGE than while at rest, but that is still 400 fat calories per hour.

That is a very basic explanation but it is true nonetheless. You will burn the highest percentage of calories from fat when you are at rest/sleeping.

SO, if is the answer for you, I feel sorry for your partner.

eating whole foods is awesome. I'm so glad I'm a cook and it's easy for me to make my own food. I'm all about simple tasty meals.

I gotta have me some refined sugars every now and then though. I keep a candy jar with hard candies in it. If I need a fix I take one or two.

Coffee is my other weak spot. But, i drink it black and I also drink a lot of water. If I stop, oh the headaches do come.
