so i made my own sushi tonight...

YUM!

i googled how to make sushi and did some reading, and went for it. i decided to start simple, no fish, just veggie sushi (yes it still sushi). i had to go to two stores to get everything, and really wish i went to walmart first cause their produce is helluva lot cheaper than randalls.

anyways. part of the experiment was to see how much cheaper it is making it yourself. not too bad! you want to buy a couple things up front, a good cutting board, a sharp knife, but maybe you allready have these. also soy and vinigar you have to buy the first time, but will make a TON of rolls.

i made them with avacado, cucumber, cream cheese and carrot. the way the math works out, about $25 can make about 100 indiviual peices. (so yeah, guess what im having for lunch and snacks the rest of the week) so like 8 peices would be $2, the restaurants probably charge at least $6, plus tax and tip.

of course price goes up quite a bit if you add meats. from what ive read, if you want actual raw meat, you dont want to buy it at the round-eye stores. you need sushi-grade meats that have been deep frozen to kill micro-organisms.

can anyone suggest a good asain market with good prices and quality meat? i mainly like salmon, smoked salmon and shrimp. my g/f like yellowtail and tuna and other stuff too. i really want to try and make some with smoked salmon next week!

oh, and its impossible to find a maki-su after 9pm in houston. weird cause most places seem to carry nori, but dont sell maki-su. i ended up rolling them without it, but well...lets just say i had experiance rolling other things in my youth and the principles still apply. i may go out and get one tomorrow anyways.

i don't taste too much of a difference either...maybe it's because i put lots of wasabi in my soy sauce, like enough to make your eyes water and clear your sinuses each bite
