Helmet is going to depend on the shape of your head and what feels more comfortable. Weight is a big selling point for me in helmets if im out riding all day a few pounds can feel like an ton.

Jackets id get a vented one for summer and a full leather for winter. Or if you can stand the heat just a perferated leather look for deals thier out there.

Gloves are a must, dont cheap out here cause if/when you go down your hands usually take a beating. I say this from experiance the concrete chewed threw some cheapies i had.

Boots to tell you the i dont wear but im in the market for some Sidis.

I Wish they offered the 2008 kawi 250 when i was 18 and wanted to get into street bikes. Its going to hold its value really well when you go to upgrade in a year or two. shoot ill buy it from you when your done learning

In tens of thousands of miles of motorcycling that I've done I only ever dropped my bike while drunk in the driveway and only ever 'wrecked' while wheelying.

Take from that what you will. Oh, and wear your gear.

+1 on gear and on taking msf before buying! Better to drop their bike in the class than drop your own.

If this is your first vehicle, I would really suggest buying a car then looking for a bike down the road. Many disgree but IMO, a bike is no substitute for a cage. That said, if you find a good one used the seller may throw in some needed gear to save you some decent $$. Then you can go out and buy a quality helmet. Good luck, and good on you for choosing the 250.

I already have a car (my 6th one and not because I wrecked it, but because I traded so much and always for an upgrade)

I'm thinking used from all of the replies.

Bike(s):
2001 SV 650 (my track ), 2005 SV 650s

here's what I spent on gear

Used Vanson fully perforated jacket with armour ... 250
Cortech DSX jeans with armor ... 90.00 (get it from Motorcycles Unlimited)
Sidi Vertigo Airs ... 150.00 ... I think ... again ... get then from Motorcycles Unlimited
Gloves ... 40 bucks ...
Nolan N-102 flip up ... 220.00

spend as much as you can on gear ... look at Craigslist and ebay for used jackets.

I am not sure...

The bike that I really want to own right now is the BMW 650gs. But the Ninja is cheaper.

Well craigslist turned out no matches.

I want more-or-less a dualsport for their versatility and BMW has great reviews, + brand loyalty.

I didn't know if I was getting a ninja 650 or sv650. ninja was a little lower so I got that.

Right. I am not looking for dispacement in my bike purchase. It was more of should I ask for the Ninja or one of the dual-sports at the class because I might end up buying a 250R Ninja or a Dualsport.
