It looks like we're going to have to plan several trips. I really want to ride out to Saratoga and check out the supposed Bragg Rd light at night. I've passed it before and it's seriously desolate. It'd be easy to pull the bikes off to the side, kill lights and wait for a spooky. But, everyone who goes has to promise not to jump on his bike and ride off in a terrorized frenzy if we see something.

Anyone ever visit Jefferson Davis Hospital? Is it possible to get inside it still?

Hello... We need to check the moon phase calendar and go when the sucker if Full - It will increase the odds of said "Spooky" events occuring - especially if there is a mist or fog. (19th through 22nd this month)

I was looking at next weekend (maybe the 16th) because this Saturday/Sunday is 50 madness. I just wanted to get the idea out there, see how many might be interested and develop a route. Maybe we can plan a spooky run once or twice a month after that. We can alternate between local and places that take a bit of riding. Patience Mr. Sixshooter, patience.

Looks like it's full around the 20-21st. It's waxing on the 16th and waning the weekend after--ahh, don't know which is best for this sort of thing. Let's just say waxing and run with it.

Here's a nice site:

*UPDATE* I was hoping to have the first Spooky Run this weekend, but this Friday and Saturday are looking bad in terms of weather. Friday is warmer but has a higher chance of rain, and Bragg Rd. is hardpacked dirt. I don't want anyone to get out there and have trouble if there are some muddyish spots. Saturday night it gets cold again, possible low of 40. I'll keep watching the weather conditions and towards the middle of the week, if they improve, I'll post ride info and a roll call.

According to one post, there's a picture of the Bragg Rd. light in the October 1974 edition of National Geographic on page 528. Anyone have a copy?

**********************************

Until then, here are several interesting accounts mined from various forums about Bragg Rd. visits:

1. I live 30 minutes from Brags road in Liberty TX. I've been there plenty of times. The way we do it is first drive about a mile or so down the dirt road until you can't see the hwy behind you anymore; it's always best to go late at night, let's say around midnight, turn your headlights off your radio off and just be quiet and wait, if nothing happens creep a little ways more down the road and chill but dont turn your lights on. Ive been there numerous times with my friend because its such a rush. Most of my experiences have been that the light will seem to chase you or follow close behind and in an instant it will shoot straight for the truck , never close enough to do any harm, or it will disappear and come back, off and on. You just have to be patient with it . Yeah these are just words but the experience …….truly breathtaking and definently an adrenalin pumper. I remember every one of my encounters vividly . I highly recommend a visit to Brags road to anyone, and if anyone wants to know how to get there or even wants someone w/ experience to show them Im always more than happy to scare the outta someone !

2. The Saratoga-Bragg Light is located approx 7 miles northwest of Honey Island Texas on FM 1293. That is the Bragg end of the road. Turn left on Bragg Road, which is a narrow dirt road. Bragg Road is very straight and level, as it was built on the bed of railroad spur. The surrounding lands belong to timber companies, so the piney woods near the road have been cut several times. Oaks and hickory trees line the road, leaving an overhead canopy of limbs that make the nights extra dark. I have seen the Bragg Light several times, and it is always a rush. The best way is to go on moonless nights (any night will do, but less light makes it easier to see). Park and keep quiet and stay watchful. Usually the light starts as a small blob, like a car far away, and grows to the point you can see it casting shadows in the trees by the road. I have seen it blink out suddenly, or fade away and reappear further along the road. The road has been a special attraction for dating couples for years, cant’ imagine why! A photo of the light can be found in the October 1974 National Geographic page 528.A family friend died on Halloween Night on the road around 1978 or ‘79. He, his wife, and a small dog went down Bragg Road for kicks and ended up getting stuck in the mud. He had an injured leg, so she left him and the pup and walked out to the highway to get help. It was a chilly night, so he left the car running. Bad idea. He and the dog both died from carbon monoxide poisoning. RIP buddy.

3. I have been down Bragg road several times and did see the light once. The light was at the far end of the road near the existing train tracks. It was very white with a light violet color emanating from the middle. It hovered near the train tracks for quite some time. The real puzzler is the cemetery located near Bragg road. As someone else was driving, I am not exactly sure of the location, but I have visited it. There is a tombstone in the cemetery which faces a different direction from the rest. I did see this tombstone located next to an old, vine-covered tree, but was pretty scared and left quickly.
I was told it was the grave of a lady thought to be a witch, thus her tombstone was placed in that direction. Can anyone else provide more insight about the cemetery story? I also heard from a friend that he was knocked unconscious while in the cemetery and his car would not start…

4. Actually, the Bragg light story is true! My dad lived in Kountze for several years. We decided to drive out there one night around 11:30pm. We turned off our lights and crept slowly down the road. We didn’t see anything at first and we almost gave up. But about half way through, we saw the light. It seemed to get brighter then it would dim. Almost like a very bright candle flame. We were both really freaked out! But we still kept creeping along in the truck trying to get closer. Unfortunatly, we never could get any closer and finally toward the end of the road it disappeared. My father is a religious guy who doesn’t believe in the ghost mumbo jumbo, but still to this day he gets chills talking about it. Its definatly worth checking out!

5. I have been to the Saratoga-Bragg light Rd which they have renamed Ghost Light Rd. We went around 8:30 in the evening before the local teens in pickups start showing up. At first the light shows up faint in the distance and gets bigger and brighter as it gets closer then fades out. There is thick woods on either side and nothing but a staight dirt road for 8 miles. As we were heading south a large light as big as a mack truck came out of the woods to our left in front of us and came right at us. I thought it was going to hit us but it just went off to the right and disappeared. There was no roads for anthing to turn off onto. As we were heading back the light appeared again and this time it chased us. As we picked up speed so did the light. This really freaked us out. It finally gave up the chase when another car showed up. This is a great place to visit if you want to find some excitement and scare a few friends.
