Buying Used

When buying a used bike from a private seller, what are key things to look for besides body damage? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

Don't take chances - Take it to a trusted mechanic - (Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited and Tim at Ellis Performance come to mind)

After the mechanical inspection, make sure you get the title when you pay. If you are on a payment plan make sure a reputable 3rd party is holding the title. (From a shop this won't matter, from an individual use an attorney or bank) Use a notary when possible as your 3rd party witness. Do your transactions at a bank and keep track of your paperwork.

Lots of "Free" contracts online for a personal sell. Put EVERYTHING in writting, don't trust the handshake promise even from a relative or friend.

yep take it to a mechanic - you will pay about an hour's labor.. spending 70-80 bucks of such "insurance" on a bike that costs several thousands is a good idea

check for little things like a lubed and adjusted chain, oil level. Sit on it and push the front forks down then see if any fork oil is leaking. Use a flashlight to look for oil leaks, and if you do decide to buy it take it for a test ride before you sign any paper work.

well, as much as i would like to buy new, I cant afford to finance a bike and pay for full coverage insurance. Insurance runs alone like 9gs. I really would like to buy from private seller, I'm just not confident in my ability to check things, and do the paperwork correctly. Plus, Im new to the Houston area and I dont know anybody down here that knows motorcycles that can come w/ me to check it. So my hand is kinda forced.

it's not hard at all buying a previously owned bike. Once you have bought the bike after inspecting it, you make sure you get the title when handing over the money. Also, it is highly recomendable that you and the seller sign a contract over the sale in case there might be a legal conflict. Once you have the title, you go to a notary and transfer the title onto the new owner's name.

suzuki doesnt require you to have insurance. of course, state of tx does. i have liability+comprehensive, and pay less than 250 a year. not full coverage.
