Yep because rather than gaining cognitive knowledge in any given subject, students are taught "the test"...sad really

The dress code has to do with respect, both for themselves and people in a higher position. My school you couldn't have fake colored hair (green blue purple etc) you couldn't have obscene cuts (mohawks etc.) guys could not have any visible piercings, girls could have only in the bottom part of their lobes, no visible tattoos on anyone, and honestly, our school was pretty much trouble free. The clothes were strict too, no clevage, no spaghetti straps for girls, no visible mid-drift, nothing shorter than arms length, etc. It teaches kids responsibility and respect. And if you don't believe me take a trip out to La Grange Tx. We don't worry about kids with guns, kids with knives, etc. It all plays part. And I think this is an example of where kids are getting lost. Yea I can see where who gives a what the kids wear, it is irrelevant to the education, but respectible kids are easier to reach and teach to. I think uniforms are rediculous, but I do think control on that stuff is important.

but here lies the problem, how do you have a test thats fair to EVERYBODY? w/ so many complaining that they are discrimintated against? you have to have standardized test so that everything is supposed to be on a level playing field.

the kids doing well are the one's w/ parenting/schooling at home. vs school only.

I think this "it has to be fair" is ignorant. A test is a test. When you go to college there are things you have to know. I think my test should be absolutely identical to anyone else out there. The requirements to graduate shouldn't be easier for one person than another, etc. etc.

+1...teh with fair. Life is not fair. You can never accommodate everyone and to try is truly futile. What you must do is what is best for your students overall. It's sad that German "C" level students come to the US to become valedictorians due to the ease of our educational (testing) system. Multiple choice is for the mentally incompetent. Only essay truly tests your knowledge- the Germans by the way, have all essay tests. I realize the amount of time such tests would take but it is necessary...our students score pretty low on the global scale of education and for us to continue to be a significant world power, we've gotta do better...

Oooh THIS is s subject I can talk about FOREVER!

1. BOTH of my kids could READ, WRITE, and COUNT BEFORE they started Kindergarten. My daughter recognized the entire alphabet by 2. The ONLY thing they were taught in elementary school was how to socialize with other kids their age, and to follow simple directions in a classroom setting. It's all I expect out of the school system.

2. My daughter is in advanced 5th grade classes, and a straight A student- also my niece (they are in the same classes). This is only because they are forced to do their homework and study spelling words EVERY night as soon as they get home from school.

3. My son is in 4th grade and has the highest math level in the entire school- it's actually the highest testable level (12.9+), but his teacher insists that he can only be given 4th grade math work in class, because it wouldn't be fair to let him pass his peers- and they don't have a class for students like him. I buy him 6th grade math books which he can do, and does at home. I don't make him, but he loves math, so he does it.

Bottom line is my kids are good students, because of good parenting. It has nothing to do with the school. They both score commended (missing two or fewer) on every TAKS test they take; Syvanna usually misses one, and Jakob has made 100 on both. The school system is what it is... a social training tool. And when a teacher can make a difference in a kid's life and encourage that student to make an effort to become a better person, that is a truly beautiful human being.

Same as Squoddy - teach them at home because school is a circus with bunch of hoops for animals to jump through...

When my oldest son was ready for school, age wise, he didn't want to go. I MADE him go, some days the teacher had to PRY him out of my arms. After 6 weeks we got his first report card. It was kindergarten so his report card was in blocks denoting what he would learn each six weeks. The only thing he could not do on the entire report card was TIE HIS SHOES! I took him out that day and bought the Hooked on Phonics. May seem silly to you guys, but it taught both my son to read better and daughter (age 3) to read.

All 4 of our kids (squoddys and mine) are in advanced classes and A/B Honor Roll students. School is a social activity.
