Fire Ants...

So there I am yesterday, on my Friday off, cleaning the yard up so I can mow the lawn... then all of a sudden my foot is on fire!! I look down and I've got, no t, 30-40 fire ants on my foot. I freak and start slapping at them run the off the grass as fast as I can, haha. Go to the hose and powerwash the rest of them sonsabitches off. Yesterday it wasn't too bad but today I work up and foot is swollen HUGE!! I guess I was lucky only to get like 7 bites, but my foot is twice the size of what it normally is. I had to cut my run short to about 1.5 miles cause my foot is throbbing so bad.

Does anyone know of any treatments or anything for fire ants? They don't have them up in NY so this is my first real run in with them...

Re: Fire Ants...

Steve: Never ever walk in your bare foot in the lawn...!!!!! and once a month you need to apply that treatment to avoid ants in your lawn.

Ask Bryan (Big Squid) about what to use in the lawn.

Re: Fire Ants...

i was thinking he should know already if he's allergic to fire ants - but then i remembered that he's "not from around these here parts"...

steve - keep it elevated... first 24hrs use ice to help swelling... after that use heat...

check to see if the swelling is genuinely the whole foot or if it's localized (so to speak) to the areas where you were bitten... if you see large bubbles of fluid forming - you need to see a doctor to probably get some mild diuretics & antibiotics... maybe something for pain too (depending on how much it hurts)...

just pay attention to it - if you see any deep red/purple/blackening or if the temperature of the area is really really hotter than the rest of you - don't hesitate to go to your dr...

if the whole thing is just swollen with no discolorations/mild discomfort, then a steriodal cream/ointment will help with the swelling - again though - you'll need a script from the dr for that...

i stayed at a holiday inn last night...

Re: Fire Ants...

Day Two Update :laughing6:

Dear diary, the swelling has gone down a bit yet it's itchier than that time I got the rash from the lady I met in the storefront in Amsterdam. Like my buddy Henry said, I've used lots of ice but haven't elevated it much for fear of the icebag falling down my leg and coming to rest in my drawers. (Being from the north, I know what it's like to get a handful of snow/ice down your drawers... not pleasent) I have noticed some weird puss filled bubbles on the spots where I was bitten. They look a little like the rash I got from the lady I met in Sweden at the international Hot Chick and Swiss Cheese festival. The soreness has lessened some also, however there are a few positions where it feels like badly pulled muscle. Kinda like how I felt after trying some Kama Sutra with that lovely Asian lady I met back in 1999.

Oh well... I'll just keep an eye on it and hope it continues with the healing process.

(thanks for all the advice guys)

Re: Fire Ants...

This year, for the first time, I used my broadcast spreader to lay down that Amdro fire-ant killer. It worked like a champ! Usually my yard is filled with them during the summer. I have not seen a single hill this year. It lasts about 9-months as I understand it. Best $35 (Costco) I have spent this year.
