Bike(s):
2004 ninja 250

not starting

Just got my first motorcycle and it needs some help starting.

2004 250 ninja
2137 miles
Bought used from a dealer 6 months ago, was ridden for 2 months and has since sat in a garage until we went and bought it yesterday. They say it hasn't been dropped and it doesn't look like it has (to my inexperienced self at least). We are trying to get it running and so far are guessing the problem is spark plugs, need to clean carb., or the gas may be old. Since the Kawasaki dealer is closed today, we're going to drain the tank in case the gas is old. If anyone has any other advice though, we'd appreciate it.

Also, does anyone have an owner's manual for this bike? Planning on picking one up from the dealer tomorrow if I can't find an online version or anything.

Congrats on the bike first off. Get a crazy good deal? Do you plan on cleaning the carbs yourself? If so and you need some help, where you located?

Do yourself a favor and stay away from dealerships. If you can wait unitl tomorrow head over to Motorcycles Unlimited. If not Metric Cycle is open today i think.

get the old gas out of there.....and i'm 99% sure your carbs are gummed up from sitting.

if you have no experience in rebuilding a carb....i would HIGHLY suggest not attempting it without a knowledgeable person showing you the way.

i'll also recommend patrick at motorcycles unlimited to help you service your bike.

Thanks everyone. Ya, I got a pretty nice deal (borrow a friends truck, drive 40 mins out there and it didn't work), and I'll check out the stores. Yes we plan on cleaning the carbs ourselves, my dad hasn't ridden in years, but I have friends who work on their own bikes that will be helping us.

99% sure its the carbs need clean. old gas doesnt help either.

pop the seat and spray some starter fluid or cab cleaner into the airbox. if its starts up then you can be pretty sure its the idle jets are clogged. id recommend charging the battery too.

Your carbs will need to be cleaned, pay extra attention to the low speed circuits.
As Chris stated, charge the battery well, and I'd recommend at least pulling the plugs and see how they look.

Went to talk to a dealer cause I'm in Pasadena and don't really know any other places (a harley shop, another shop that specializes in cruisers, and the other I know doesn't do any repairs). Motorcycles Unlimited is a bit far away from me. We plan on doing the work ourselves once my friend gets in this weekend, I was just wondering what the cost at other bike shops were. Didn't take my bike to them.

Too many to list

Never ever spray anything into the carbs to try and get your bike running!!!
If it won't run something is WRONG. Just fix whats wrong.
Usually battery, plugs, carb. Badda bing Badda Vroom.
