Post want to get into super moto

i have been looking into super motos for a while now. for those experienced with it i have a few questions.

1.can a budget street legal supermoto bike be made under $2000.
2. which bikes are the most competetive in cmra supermoto?
3. what are some good choices for street legal supermoto project bikes.
4. what kind of additional gear will i need? i have helmets, one piece kang suit,
boots

1. yes, but not competitive in any way
2. 450's i think..see the cmra forum
3. One's with stock lighting coil. If you have power, everything else is easy
4. back protector. gauntlet gloves.

If you want budget, forget racing cmra or any big bikes. Do minis at tmgp.

I have a ktm 200 exc I bought for $1300 and modded into a street bike for under $200. Fun as heck, street legal, but I have to pre-mix it at the pump. Still has stock rims.

2 main thing people complain about. Don't buy a '98 or early '99 the starter gear was changed and if you engine backfired when you started it it would break. You can buy the new parts and fix it if you want. And I think it was in '02 when they changed the base gasket to one that didn't leak. Other than that I love it. I acctually own 2. The other one is a parts bike I picked up from a guy who had the starter gear break off.

You need new rims if you want an actual motard.
This is what it looked like when I started.

excel rims. I went to a wider small 17 in the front instead of the stock 21" and to a wider rim in the back. Now this thing is not a "race bike" but it is bullet proof. If you are wanting to compete the 450 would be better. I love this bike though. It will do 0-60 in 4.5 secs.

i want to compete sooner or later. but would love to get a streetlegal one in the mean time to have some fun with. i have a 03 r6 with a lot of goodies which is a
fun bike. but i rode a supermoto bike for the first time today and i was hooked. so i think the dr650 would be a good choice. any other bike to look for from honda, kawi, yamaha?

what bike did you ride? Honda makes an xr650 and kawi makes a klr650 They are all "dual-sports" that are going to need rims for supermoto. If you wanna ride mine to see what it is like just let me know. I will be at the drag strip tomorrow. If you are there you can play on it.

i would rather convert a 650 on my own like you did. seems actually cheaper with more performance potential than a drz400. am i correct?

I've got a XR650L that I converted. Bought it for like 2400 with 8k miles. Rims/tires/spokes will cost you about $600, but plan on spending more like 800 to get 17's on it, assuming you don't want to be able to swap back to dirt tires (commitment!). Oversized front brake is a HUGE plus, and will cost you aobut 300 I believe. Feel free to get in tough with me if you want to check out the 650, or I also have a supermoto'd CRF450, so you could compare them side-by-side.

...and if you plan on doing any serious street time on the bike, then definitely get a dual-sport bike and convert it. houston riding will not make that 450 last too long. It definitely wasn't designed for that kind of riding. look for air/oil cooled big singles.
