thats what I did and I turned out fine... Well, I did get smashed by a truck one time but it was on one of my 600's.. not my fault either!
I started out on my 600 and have had no trouble what so all with controlling it, if i had gotton a 250 i would have been bored with in prolly within a month, As long as u respect the machine and what it can do to u you will be fine. IM not a professional racer by any means but i definetly know how to ride a bike.
By the way no MSF, 10k miles on my bike and have never even came close to layin the bike down, Get what u want! I guess anything is better then nothing, oh and dont finance the bike with the dealer they will u royally!

look...

http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/551915314.html

1K, ride it for a while...get used to a bike on the street and some street experience then turn around and sell the thing for what you paid for it.

With all due respect, neither of you had ever met the guy. I wouldn't be giving that kind of advise to someone you had never even met, nor know. He knows where he's at, as far as his experience, comfort level, and moreso motor skillset as to where he'd like to start. Just because you guys started on a 1000/600 doesn't mean you were not just lucky, either.

the ninja 250 aint too small, but you will look a little goofy. Look at all the 50 riders and tmgp people.

dont sink 4 g's into a new one, buy an old one for 1500, ride it for 6 months, sell it for 1500 and get a new bike ie sv 650, older 600.

remember this is your first bike, not your last

lol you and poporider should meet youguys would be best of friends, but as some1 stated before go to craigs list find a used one,for a cheaper price, ride for a few months make sure you like it that way your not stuck with high dealer fees or inventory fees and higher tax, then also your not stuck with the higher deprecitation(spellng) of the newer bike, i think if your smart enough and safe enough you might grow out of the 250, and there not hard to sell, my .02 though.
