ZX7 on the track... questions

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of getting a new street bike and thinking of hitting the track in the very near future. My question to you experienced track heads is: While the ZX7 was a race replica for the street, is it going to be as confidence inspiring on the track as any other bike and easy to learn on?

Before I dump any (more) money into the bike, I am wondering how suitable she is for learning to drag a knee with Houston's finest.

TIA for any information.

First, don't worry about "dragging a knee", second, that bike will be great for the track as long as it's in good mechanical shape!

Do yourself a quick favor and hit up Motorcycles Unlimited to give it a "once over". Make sure your chain and tires are in good shape, change vital fluids (including fork oil if it's old), make sure your brake pads are good and that the bike runs well.

You should have a great time, and that is a good bike to be sure.

I'm definitely going to have to get new rubber on the wheels. The chain is new(ish) and I just got EBC HH pads about a month ago. I think I might need some fresh coolant and clutch fluid, but other than that she's good to go.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm still kind of lost in the whole process of getting out to a track; I don't personally know anyone that has been out.

February 16th, Grand Sport Speedway. Come on out and watch. Ask for "Tom" and I'll be happy to show you around and get you going. With so many tracks these days, you should have no excuse not to get out there.

Where is UNT? If you're in Northern Texas (I take it that's what U "NT" stands for), we also have a track day coming up at Oak Hill Raceway in Henderson- show up to see the track day on Friday, stay for the races on Saturday and Sunday if it's close to you or if you just want to burn the weekend watching some great motorcycle racing!

not a big deal getting to the track.
Make sure bike is up to par.
Have or rent leathers(boots and full gauntlet gloves too if you don't have them).
Means of getting bike to and from track.
Gas can with gas.
Some tools just in case.
Food and drinks.
Chair or two.
Be open-minded and ready to learn.
I think that's about it.

Come be a spectator first and ask questions. People at the track are very approachable for the most part, and everyone is willing to help.

Oh yeah, Mike, you have a pM.

They're all good. You'll find that all of the TD orgs have a very helpful group of folks.

Personally, I don't know if you can tell by the name or not... I think LSTD is a cut above...

Depending on where you live, check our schedule at www.lstd.com and check one out for yourself. You won't be disappointed... unless an addiction that is the best thing since sliced bread disappoints you!

ain't that the truth.....i wish somebody would of told me about the addiction sooner.

plenty of people here are more than willing to help out someone new at the track, you just have to ask. the zx7 will be just fine, just give it a once over like tom said and get ready to learn what your bike was designed to do. as far as riding it to the track, i've seen a few people do it, but like someone else already said, you're going to be pretty beat up at the end of the day. i wouldn't suggest it unless you live really, really close by.

Sweet. Thanks again for the info. Perhaps I could hop on a trailer with someone. I'm about 5'7" and 145, so I get a good workout with that zx7. I'm sure I'll be beat after throwing her through a few sessions.

umm, the ZX7 is a pimp track bike....nice and heavy, but very stable...I did 8 or 9 trackdays last yr on my 94 zx7 and I had no problem hanging with the "faster than average" group....it's all about corner speed.

Where are you located? I don't like to go to the track without a buddy for those just in case moments. I will be looking for someone to travel with for track days this season. I already have a truck and trailer.

I might come out to play at Cresson, Feb 11. If you are ready to come out for that day let me know. I have friends that already signed up but I will wait til Thursday before that date to sign up. Checking for weather forecast.
If I could assist you in any way, let me know.

You doing the n00b day 3/8 at MSRH? I stall have to find a way to get my bike to the track.

For the TD regulars(especially LMS) I have a scrape on my helmet where it touched, enough to take the paint off. . . will it pass an inspection?

they don't check your gear...use your head....if it's been down hard I'd pick up another...if you dropped it softly 2 feet off the ground I'd say you'll be alright.

Light scratches are fine but deep gouches might not pass. LMS have not been strict about gear inspection but it could change at last minutes. They are looking out for your safety. If they seems/deems it unsafe, then best bet not to take your chance out there.
