Where can I get a custom design for my helmet?? Is airbrushing the only way? or is there somewhere I can take it so that it looks like a factory job??

as far as a helmet being picked out I was just gonna purchase a solid color (possibly HJC or SHOEI) and then explain to the artist what I want done.

One I had done over this side of the water:
Before: Shoei XR1000 with gravel rash.
After: Mine and painters design, colours are REALLY bright candy flake !!

I found it quite difficult to come up with a design as I'm not artistic at all. I wanted it to be bright and eye catching but conveying what I had in my head to the painter was tricky. Do your homework and use colour charts to pick out shades. Don't say, “I’d like that bit red" like I did, apparently there are scores of different shades of red !!
What I learnt is that painters are not mind readers and often what they have in their mind about a design/theme is very different to yours !!
A plain white good quality helmet is a good donor option, avoid polycarbonate made lids at all costs.
Airbrushing is relatively expensive so the more graphics you use the cheaper the work could be.
You should only use lazar printed paint "friendly" graphics and avoid layered vinyls but take the painter’s advice on this.
Having the helmet double and triple lacquered although more costly means you can run your hands over it and it feels like glass. More shine too !!
I had the damaged helmet checked by Shoei for structural integrity, as they call it, before having it painted.
Good luck with yours

that looks awesome!!!!!!! And that's the theme I wanted to do as well, I wanted the Philippine flag and various national icons on there. Props to the work!

I've heard that airbrushing can damage the protective properties of the helmet. Any truth to this?

Paint solvents and polycarbonate helmets are a no no. New water based "green" paints may be OK though.
It's not so much the airbrushing, as this is done with very small quantities of mainly base and tints, but the solvents in the primer and laquer coats which would be applied with a gun that do the damage.
Most good quality GRP/Carbon composite helmets would be OK to paint.

Thanks man, we love it although if I could turn the clock back there are a few things I would do differently.
Gary (the painter) is a genius IMO, I could spend hours watching him and like all good craftsmen he makes it look so easy.
Good luck with yours, post it up when its done.
I'll post up a couple more of his, might give you some ideas.
