it was awesome around christmas time to go to the mall. basically all the cars were at a stand still and i was able to just go around all of them. was a little scary b/c i knew the kind of mood the cagers must have been in, i was just especially careful anywhere that it was remotely possible for a car to move.

and i don't understand the "wait in line" mentality toward bikes. if i get in front of your car on my bike, i guarantee that it's not me that'll be slowing you down.

It's allright, just as long as you don't take the law into your own hands and cause harm to the rider like some people do. Sometime we get jealous that others are moving faster than we are.

I moved to Houston permanently since '91, and I still don't do it.

Seriously though, I wish it was legal because it makes sense. I don't do it, but not because it's illegal, but because even if it was, the drivers here in Houston hate it. I've been with friends in their cages, or when they're in mine, and almost every time we had seen a lanesplitter, they would curse him out, or just be about it altogether. With the road rage epidemic that we see so often nowadays, it's just too dangerous. They just don't like the idea that they have to be stuck in traffic, while the guy in the bike doesn't and gets ahead of them.

If it ever became legal, I would still wait awhile (maybe even a long while) before I would start practicing it on a regular basis.

As far as someone opening a door ... highly unlikely! Im sure a lot of people WANT to do it ... but 99% wont because they will mess up their door pretty bad.
And whenever I happen to look into some of the cagers faces, they usually have the same look ... they are thinking, "that f**cker!, but , I'd do it if I could!"
+1 I do that all the time. I feel much safer continuing to move as opposed to sitting my on my lil 300lb R1 while surrounded by all these 1 ton cars and multiple ton trucks. I had a friend who lost his dad last year while in traffic on 610- he was hit from behind by a driver not paying attention. So yes, I'll take my chances with the doors and the unlikelihood that a car will attempt to change lanes while traffic is sitting still hence giving him no where to go. I SPLIT AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO...now I will say that I'm not hauling, I'm usually doing around 10 - 20 mph depending on things like lane width and proximity of vehicles. I personally can't wait until it becomes legal...

IMO, filtering to the ft of the line at a traffic light is asking for trouble. chances are your gonna hit another red, and the cars you just filtered past are now caught up w/ you. and their about you "getting ahead"

if you split in traffic chances are the car thats will never see you again, but at stoplights a diff. story.

both are still illegal, and if you get popped don't come on here an whine about it.

This I agree with partly...

I WILL NOT split at a light with one exception: there's some that decides not to pull all the way up to the light, but rather, chooses to leave about two car lengths of room ahead of him for whatever given reason. That me off and I do it just to frustrate (yeah I'm a bit confrontational). Other than that, I avoid the lane splitting at the light for reasons stated above and others. It's currently illegal but that's a chance I take willingly. I will say though that regardless of what you think, the majority of people driving the roads today do something illegal at one point or another...it's all relative...

This topic is revisited about once every month.

No reason why we shouldn't be able to split the lanes if traffic is stopped. It's a whole lot better than getting rear ended by some moron.
