LANE SPLITTING!!!!! WTF

Twice in the past two weeks on my way to work I've seen riders split lanes at red lights or slow going traffic in the middle of rush hour. Personally, I hate the practice and feel like cagers find it hard enough to see us already. Not sure, but I think its actually illegal in houston. The guy I saw this morning had a new gixxer with paper plates.

Thoughts?

It's a very common practice over sea's and it works well if everyone was used to it.... here is another story altogether in most Asian country's for example mopeds and motorcycles out number the cars so people are aware of them not the case in the states...

I personally hate seeing that. Wait in line like the rest of us. That's part of the reason that car people don't like moto people.

Go live in Bangkok for a while and tell me if you don't start lane splitting (riding on sidewalks ect...)

this discussion comes up every so often.

1) it's not legal in TX, it is legal in CA and many many foreign countries
2) lane splitting does not mean riding the emergancy lane

IMO, it would be great. nobody has to L/S do it if you want.

there was a bill in the TX house, but it never really got off the ground. it did say you had to have the same requirements to L/S as the helmet laws.

DITTO!!!

I only do it when at a red light and traffic isn't moving, and I roll through the cars going 10mph or less. cars cant cut from one lane to another if there isn't any room to cut into.
As far as someone opening a door ... highly unlikely! Im sure a lot of people WANT to do it ... but 99% wont because they will mess up their door pretty bad.
And whenever I happen to look into some of the cagers faces, they usually have the same look ... they are thinking, "that f**cker!, but , I'd do it if I could!"

We live in a city where jacked up Z71s do thier best to dodge 2" water puddles and where Expeditions slam on thier brakes before going over railroad tracks and speed bumps. I expect the worse from every driver out there. Cali is a diff story since many drivers actually look out for riders next to them. I think it's just too risky to do it ALL the time.

I was doing a shutdown about 8 years ago in Huntington Beach, transported my bike and rode in California for about 3 months. Lane splitting was great. Nothing greater coming from Texas than splitting with a popo leading the way.

I LS but only if the conditions are right. I will only do it at red lights with a long line, there has to be a big gap between lanes, and I have to be able to get to the front before the light turns green. If all these are true then I will be able to accelerate out in front of the cages with out any impact on them.

Since I always follow these rules I have only done it a dozen times or so.
