Need Help with oil light!!!!!!!

Last night i changed the oil on my 2000 Ninja EX500, and this morning my oil light came on. I talked with my friend, and he pointed out that i put too much oil in, so i drained it and got the right amount in, and the oil light still wont go off. what do i need to do?

Re: Need Help with oil light!!!!!!!

Did you change the filter? The EX uses a cartridge style filter, if it's installed improperly it can restrict oil flow. Did you possibly knock loose the oil pres. s/u wire while you were working on it?

Re: Need Help with oil light!!!!!!!

I KNOW A FEW REASONS WHY AN OIL LIGHT WILL ACTIVATE: MAYBE TOO MUCH OIL, MAYBE TOO LITTLE OIL, MAYBE LOW OIL PRESSURE, AND POSSIBLY THE OIL PUMP ISN'T WORKING UP TO MINIMUM STANDARDS CAUSING LOW OIL PRESSURE; (I HAD THIS PROBLEM ONE TIME, HAD TO SWAP OUT THE DARN OIL PUMP WHICH WAS A BEOTCH. I THEN INSTALLED A HOMEMADE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE TO VIEW IN THE FUTURE SO I DIDN'T SPIN A BEARING DUE TO LOW OR NO OIL PRESSURE) OTHER REASONS: DEFECTIVE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH--EASY TO CHECK, ALSO CHECK THE CIRCUIT WIRING BETWEEN THE PRESSURE SWITCH-LIGHT-AND POWER SOURCE,ETC... HMM...IS THE FILTER ON TIGHT ENOUGH AND ALSO THE FILLER CAP?? THAT WAS A LAST MINUTE THOUGHT. *sorry about typing in caps....forgot to switch it off again. and didn't realize it until now. oops! i don't know if any of these things are your problem, but i tried to help as much as i could. good luck. iv'e been working on my bike for the last five hours! ugh....

Re: Need Help with oil light!!!!!!!

i changed the filter with a fram. the oil level is correct, is there any way to check to make sure that there is oil pressure? also, am i at any risk of blowing my motor by riding it with the light on. like i said, it came on the morning after changing the oil, i had ridden it prior to that with out any problems

Re: Need Help with oil light!!!!!!!

Sorry, I was thinking EX250, my bad.
Which Fram did you use? PH6017 for '90-'04, PH6010 for '87-'89.

However Hi Flo makes a note to use HF202 for '87-'89, HF303 for '90-'02, HF204 for '03-'05. Could be the Fram won't work right with your year.
If you had no problems beforehand than I would look at what you changed. If the light is on it's really probably due to low oil pressure and you can damage your motor by running it.

Can he just pull the fuel pump fuse and turn it over to build pressure again?

Re: Need Help with oil light!!!!!!!

i unscrewed a "rocker shaft plug" on the side of the head, put my thumb over the hole, turned the motor over to see if pressure exhisted enough to make oil shoot from around my thumb and outwards. it didn't. so, we double checked by in a homemade line/pressure gauge and testing again. no pressure confirmed.

this test let me know that my oil pump was doing its job.

replaced my oil pump, and installed a line and gauge from a plug on the oil pan to monitor pressure in the future and not spin a bearing or overheat a motor due to low/no oil pressure.

this is good info for anyone that wants to see actual oil pressure full time and is cheap to do, considering the other possibilities! maybe someone will like the idea.
